{"id":1598,"date":"2008-01-28T12:12:07","date_gmt":"2008-01-28T20:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2008\/01\/blogging_during_wartime\/"},"modified":"2008-01-28T12:12:07","modified_gmt":"2008-01-28T20:12:07","slug":"blogging_during_wartime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2008\/01\/blogging_during_wartime.html","title":{"rendered":"Blogging During Wartime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/2008exhibition.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt title=\"Joshua Brown at The Graduate Center exhibition for Life During Wartime\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/josh%20279.jpg\" width=278 align=right border=0 \/><\/a>The puppet master looks like your friendly uncle with a Cheshire cat grin and rose-colored glasses that drip with what? &#8230; strawberry soda? &#8230; cherry syrup? &#8230; Aw gee,  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/ldw202.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>have a closer look<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, it&#8217;s <i>blood<\/i>.<br \/>\nArtist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Joshua Brown<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, who drew the caricature as a diary entry for his visual political blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/ldw.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Life During Wartime<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, says that before the invasion of Iraq he was fooled into believing &#8220;it was going to be a short, ugly, bloody war and that American influence in the Middle East was going to be triumphant.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/ldw255.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt title=\"Diary entry for Sept. 13, 2007 [After 'An Available Candidate' an editorial cartoon about Andrew Jackson, circa 1848] (Click to enlarge)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/petraeus%20180.jpg\" width=179 align=left border=0 \/><\/a>It&#8217;s a telling admission, because Brown&#8217;s main occupation is teaching radical social history. (He is a grad school professor with a long list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/cv.htm#5\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>scholarly works<\/strong><\/font><\/a> to his credit.) But candor is typical of him and worth keeping in mind when looking at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gc.cuny.edu\/press_information\/highlights\/2008\/HIGH_wartime.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>exhibition<\/strong><\/font><\/a> of all 270 diary entries now on view at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gc.cuny.edu\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>The Graduate Center, CUNY<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, in Manhattan.<br \/>\nBrown trained as an artist before getting his Ph.D. in working-class history at Columbia. (Two murals he painted in 1979 for Yoko Ono and John Lennon apparently still decorate her apartment in the Dakota.) These days he heads the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashp.cuny.edu\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>American Social History Project\/Center for Media and Learning<\/strong><\/font><\/a> based at the Grad Center.<br \/>\nBrown began doing his visual blog on the first day of the Iraq war. In a statement for the Life During Wartime exhibition, he writes:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/ldw107.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt title=\"Xmas Eve in Mosul, Dec. 26, 2004 (Click to enlarge)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/Xmas%20In%20Mosul%20200.jpg\" width=200 align=right border=0 \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the beginning I intended to chronicle and comment on the impact of the war on the home front &#8212; and also to convey some critical views about the war and the duplicitous reasons for its prosecution, which at the time, and especially in editorial cartoons, were getting comparatively little public access.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Starting with a rush, he posted a diary entry &#8220;every two or three days,&#8221; Brown says. He then settled down to posting them once a week. &#8220;It was the first time I had done art regularly in 30 years,&#8221; he adds. &#8220;I&#8217;m not happy with every one by a long shot, but I don&#8217;t feel lost.&#8221; Politically, however, he still feels &#8220;pissed off, frustrated and ineffective. I must say it doesn&#8217;t feel cathartic.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/jan-herman\/blogging-during-wartime_b_84053.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>(Crossposted at HuffPo)<\/strong><\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>Change of subject:<\/strong> Jan. 29 &#8212; The email message from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moveon.org\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Moveon.org<\/strong><\/font><\/a> began, &#8220;If you&#8217;re like us, you dread watching the State of the Union. It&#8217;s depressing: The doublespeak, the distortions, the incessant Republican applause for far-right policies and words that mean nothing.&#8221;<br \/>\nTrue, but the message didn&#8217;t go far enough. It should have continued like this: &#8220;It is never more apparent than during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2008\/01\/20080128-13.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>State of the Union<\/strong><\/font><\/a> that the pols in the Congress on both sides of the aisle are a clubby class apart, all of them wedded under the skin.&#8221;<br \/>\nLast night <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2008\/01\/images\/20080128-13_d-0549-2-515h.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>there she was<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, Nancy Pelosi, the leader of the so-called opposition, smiling like the queen of a beauty pageant, applauding the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2007\/01\/time_for_him_to.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>President With His Head Up His Ass<\/strong><\/font><\/a> &#8212; <i>and <\/i> applauding <i>and<\/i> applauding &#8212; long after decorum required, thus setting a deferential tone for his reception. (At least Harry Reid, for whom I have no great love, sat stone-faced.)<br \/>\nAnd we, the poor schmucks of the electorate, got to watch.<br \/>\n<strong>Postscript:<\/strong> Jan. 30 &#8212; Furthermore, is anyone these days writing a funnier, more penetrating column than Mark Morford?
