{"id":1557,"date":"2007-04-30T09:46:59","date_gmt":"2007-04-30T16:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2007\/04\/mission_impeachment\/"},"modified":"2007-04-30T09:46:59","modified_gmt":"2007-04-30T16:46:59","slug":"mission_impeachment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2007\/04\/mission_impeachment.html","title":{"rendered":"Mission Impeachment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mission_Accomplished\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt title=\"Infamous May 1, 2003, photo op on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln near the coast of California.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/missionthumbsup.jpg\" width=240 align=right border=0 \/><\/a>Nobody mentioned <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mission_Accomplished\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;Mission Accomplished&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> &#8212; Tuesday is the fourth anniversary of that infamous photo op &#8212; but when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrishedges.org\/wst_page6.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Chris Hedges<\/strong><\/font><\/a> called for the impeachment of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2007\/01\/time_for_him_to.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>President With His Head Up His Ass<\/strong><\/font><\/a> during a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booktv.org\/feature\/index.asp?segID=8172&#038;schedID=485\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>panel on the Iraq war<\/strong><\/font><\/a> at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on Sunday, he got a standing ovation.<br \/>\nHedges read a short speech, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truthdig.com\/report\/item\/no_one_is_above_the_law\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;No One Should Be Above the Law,&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> which he&#8217;d given earlier last week in Washington at a large gathering of activists, politicians and others to launch an <a href=\"http:\/\/impeach07.org\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>impeachment initiative<\/strong><\/font><\/a>.<br \/>\nThe speech began by pointing out that Prez  Huha &#8220;has shredded, violated or absented America from its obligations under international law. &#8230; Most egregiously, he launched an illegal war in Iraq based on fabricated evidence we now know had been discredited even before it was made public.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This president is guilty, in short, of what in legal circles is known as the &#8220;crime of aggression.&#8221; And if we as citizens do not hold him accountable for these crimes, if we do not begin the process of impeachment, we will be complicit in the codification of a new world order, one that will have terrifying consequences.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2007\/04\/grrrr.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>noted last week<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, Dennis the Menace has already introduced a bill to impeach Prez Huha&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2007\/04\/welcome_back_bi.html#more\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Attack Dog<\/strong><\/font><\/a>. The Democratic leaders in the Congress have said that bill is going nowhere, however, and I don&#8217;t think Hedges expects the impeachment initiative against Huha himself to go anywhere either.
