{"id":1535,"date":"2007-01-08T10:45:37","date_gmt":"2007-01-08T18:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2007\/01\/terminology\/"},"modified":"2007-01-08T10:45:37","modified_gmt":"2007-01-08T18:45:37","slug":"terminology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2007\/01\/terminology.html","title":{"rendered":"Terminology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2007\/01\/time_for_him_to.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>question was<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, &#8220;Does anyone out there have a suitably demeaning substitute for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2005\/08\/jim_holts_criti.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Bullshitter-in-Chief<\/strong><\/font><\/a>?&#8221;   The answers were, &#8220;Of course.&#8221; But the suggested terms, ranging from &#8220;d&#8217;Oily Farte&#8221; and &#8220;Mr. Stupid&#8221; to &#8220;Banana Head,&#8221; &#8220;Fratboy&#8221; and &#8220;The Dolt,&#8221; failed to inspire the staff.<br \/>\nSo we&#8217;ll stick with our term, shortened to <strong>The Bullshitter<\/strong>. We hope this will underscore his iconic status not just as the first among equals in a fraudulent regime but as an exemplar of fraudulence. From time to time we may also refer to him as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2007\/01\/time_for_him_to.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>President With His Head Up His Ass<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, Prez Huha, or PWHHUHA (the other acronym).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nWhen he gives his expected &#8220;surge&#8221; speech later this week, let&#8217;s all remember what Harry G. Frankfurt says in the foreword to his latest little essay, <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Truth-Harry-G-Frankfurt\/dp\/030726422X\/sr=1-1\/qid=1168271637\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1\/102-0100347-5967312?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;On Truth,&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> about his previous one, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bullshit-Harry-G-Frankfurt\/dp\/0691122946\/sr=1-2\/qid=1168271637\/ref=pd_bbs_2\/102-0100347-5967312?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;On Bullshit&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;bullshitters, although they represent themselves as being engaged simply in conveying information, are not engaged in that enterprise at all. Instead, and most essentially, they are fakers and phonies who are attempting by what they say to manipulate the opinions and attitudes of those to whom they speak. What they care about primarily, therefore, is whether what they say is <i>effective<\/i> in accomplishing this manipulation.
