An acquaintance mentioned him. But I don&#8217;t know anything about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishtheater.org\/Jewish%20Theater\/Tuvia%20Tenenbom.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Tuvia Tenenbom<\/strong><\/font><\/a> except what I&#8217;ve read. Never met him. Never saw any of his plays. I&#8217;m not much of a theatergoer these days.<br \/>\nAfter reading his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishtheater.org\/Jewish%20Theater\/LetterFromPoland.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;Letter From Poland&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> and watching his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QWlkOk-mcU0\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>video posted on YouTube<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, however, I plan to see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishtheater.org\/index.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;Last Jew in Europe,&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> his latest play, when it opens in New York.<br \/>\nHow could I not? Tenenbom, who is the artistic director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishtheater.org\/Jewish%20Theater\/Mission.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Jewish Theater of New York<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, apparently has a combination of brains and balls rarely found in the world, let alone in the world of the theater.<br \/>\n(Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishtheater.org\/Jewish%20Theater\/NYT.Virgin.Review.jpg\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>review<\/strong><\/font><\/a> of his previous play &#8212; billed as a &#8220;theatrical journey into the pleasures of chaos&#8221; &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishtheater.org\/Jewish%20Theater\/Last%20Virgin.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;The Last Virgin.&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> Love his titles.)<br \/>\n<center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QWlkOk-mcU0\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt title=\"Fuck the Jews, Jude (German for Jew), Jewish Gas (meaning Nazi gas chambers) and Star of Davids on the gallows are some of slogans that can be found today in almost every street in Lodz, Poland.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jewishtheater.org\/Jewish%20Theater\/Lodz.iamges.jpg\" width=420 border=0 \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nI&#8217;ll admit when I read that &#8220;Last Jew&#8221; &#8212; billed as a tragicomedy on racism and self-hate &#8212; is &#8220;the story of love between a young Polish Jew and his Christian fianc&#233;e,&#8221; I thought, <i>Uh-oh. Wait a minute. Here come da schmaltz<\/i>. But then I read on and was reassured:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Blood and vodka flow on stage, accompanied at times by disco music, as characters move deeper and deeper into their fears, hatred of the foreign, illusions and delusions. Crosses amass on the ground; some portray crucified young females nailed onto them, others young Hasidic males. As time passes, fire engulfs stage, burnt papers fly aimlessly, and images of anti-Semitic graffiti pop in &#038; out of sight, dreamily mingling with the smoke.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds promising. A real spectacular, no? &#8220;Last Jew in Europe&#8221; is scheduled to open on Feb. 7 at a theater in Manhattan, still to be announced.<br \/>\n<strong>Postscript:<\/strong> Word comes that the production is to open on March 4, 2007, at <a href=\"http:\/\/newyork.citysearch.com\/profile\/7166568\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>The Triad Theater<\/strong><\/font><\/a> (158 W. 72nd St., between Amsterdam and Columbus Aves.).
