So I dunno how good, bad or indifferent it was. But he seems to be getting lots of mileage out of being dumped, including an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/opinion\/commentary\/la-op-grove15oct15,0,64762.story?coll=la-news-comment-opinions\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>op-ed piece<\/strong><\/font><\/a> in Sunday&#8217;s LA Times (thank you, Romenesko). Here&#8217;s what grabbed my eye:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From time to time, distinguished papers such as [T]he New York Times and the Los Angeles Times have ventured into this frisky territory, but have usually ended their walk on the wild side in a hand-wringing identity crisis: Can we be serious journalists and still publish a gossip column?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To &#8220;venture into frisky territory&#8221; is lame journospeak, far too prim to equate with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Walk-Wild-Side-Novel\/dp\/0374525323\/sr=1-1\/qid=1161017040\/ref=pd_bbs_1\/102-0100347-5967312?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;A Walk on the Wild Side,&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> the title of Nelson Algren&#8217;s classic 1956 novel (set among the pimps, whores and con men of Depression-era New Orleans). It&#8217;s just one more proof of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2006\/03\/wild_side_still.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Algren&#8217;s devaluation<\/strong><\/font><\/a>.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve written before that the title of the novel has been &#8220;popularized and co-opted as an idiomatic phrase by Hollywood and Madison Avenue.&#8221; I should have added journalists, of course, especially <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailysentinel.com\/news\/content\/news\/stories\/2006\/10\/01\/chimp_haven.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>headline writers<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, along with <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.wildside.org\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>crossdresser boutiques<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkwild.com\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>nature tour operators<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/walkonthewildside.org\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>animal rescuers<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/japingape.blogspot.com\/2006\/05\/walk-on-wild-side.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>bloggers<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mauiqueen.com\/mauiguide\/wildside.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>nudist surfers<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsci.washington.edu\/news\/Autumn98\/wildside.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>academics<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.cmu.edu\/afs\/cs\/user\/scotts\/ftp\/bulgarians\/stonewall.txt\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>gay activists<\/font><\/strong><\/a>, and so on.<br \/>\n<object width=\"400\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/IK2i3JvpUMM\"><\/param><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\"><\/param><\/object><br \/>\nAll of them would have earned a contemptuous chuckle from Algren, if only because of injured pride. But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IK2i3JvpUMM&#038;eurl=\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Jimmy Smith&#8217;s bluesy, laid-back &#8220;Walk,&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> though not stellar to my taste,  is one use I&#8217;m sure he would have approved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I never read Lloyd Grove&#8217;s gossip column in New York&#8217;s Daily News.
