Consider these words, posted on May 17, 2004, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2004\/05\/report_from_the.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;Report From the Land of Is&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If &#8220;regime change&#8221; comes in November, [Paul] Krugman said, he hoped the next administration would &#8220;throw open the records&#8221; and not be &#8220;too magnanimous&#8221; to this one. &#8220;I believe the sunshine is going to be quite deadly,&#8221; he said. It is precisely because the Bush\u00a0regime\u00a0has so much to hide, Krugman added, that the upcoming &#8220;election campaign is\u00a0going to be so bitter.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The campaign <i>was<\/i> bitter. Regime change not only didn&#8217;t happen, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/2005\/08\/jim_holts_criti.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Bullshitter-in-Chief<\/strong><\/font><\/a>&#8216;s regime took over totally. Sunshine &#8212; that is, Congressional inquiries with Democrat-controlled subpoena power &#8212; hid behind Republican clouds in both the House and Senate.<br \/>\nNow consider these words, reported today on the front page of The New York Times, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/05\/08\/washington\/08stakes.html?hp&#038;ex=1147147200&#038;en=3355aa6ffcb6217c&#038;ei=5094&#038;partner=homepage\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;Rove Is Using Threat of Loss to Stir G.O.P.&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The prospect of the administration spending its last two years being grilled by angry Democrats under the heat of partisan spotlights has added urgency to the efforts by Karl Rove and Mr. Bush&#8217;s political team to hang on to the Republican majorities in Congress.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The American electorate didn&#8217;t give enough of a shit to let the sunshine in last time.
