Have a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/postclassic\/2006\/06\/some_have_versatility_thrust_u.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#0033399>Kyle Gann&#8217;s post<\/strong><\/font><\/a>. I had no idea. And of course, I&#8217;m <strike>terribly unhappy<\/strike> about it. (That&#8217;s how my staff of thousands spells <i>thrilled<\/i>.)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0520229827\/qid=1149785310\/sr=2-1\/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1\/104-1575367-2715942?s=books&#038;v=glance&#038;n=283155\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Writings from the Village Voice\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/MUSICDOWNTON.jpg\" width=180 align=right border=0 \/><\/a>What I really love &#8212; besides the pleasure he got from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/030680798X\/qid=1149785912\/sr=1-5\/ref=sr_1_5\/104-1575367-2715942?s=books&#038;v=glance&#038;n=283155\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>my Wyler biography<\/strong><\/font><\/a> &#8212; is how he compares an issue in one field to another, in this case auteurism in film and stylistic identity in music. It&#8217;s not an exact comparison by any means, and he makes no claim that it is. But it&#8217;s the sort of transposition of ideas &#8212; offbeat and unexpected &#8212; that comes naturally to him from what I&#8217;ve read on his blog and in his latest book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0520229827\/qid=1149785310\/sr=2-1\/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1\/104-1575367-2715942?s=books&#038;v=glance&#038;n=283155\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;Music Downtown: Writings from the Village Voice.&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> When he insists &#8220;art is about appearances, not reality,&#8221; I&#8217;m convinced.<br \/>\nWhat impresses me most about Kyle Gann&#8217;s writing in general, apart from the consistent clarity and the ease of expression, is its personal touch. And no, his mother didn&#8217;t pay me to say this. But yes, I realize gratitude like this is unseemly.<br \/>\n<strong>Postscript:<\/strong> Looks like my rowboat is really comin&#8217; in. Although it just got bigger, mebbe to a motorboat. The New Yorker has a Hilton Als profile of cinematographer Gregg Toland coming next week that refers to and quotes from my Wyler bio, which will likely move the book up from #396,483 to #396,481 on Amazon. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/kids\/lyrics\/row.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Row, row, row,<\/strong><\/font><\/a> etc. And now this, <a href=\"http:\/\/realitystudio.org\/bibliographic_bunker\/jan_herman \" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>from an earlier life:<\/strong><\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jed Birmingham surveys the avant-garde publications of Jan Herman: the Nova Broadcasts, the San Francisco Earthquake, and his collaborations with William S.
