{"id":1373,"date":"2006-02-06T11:27:24","date_gmt":"2006-02-06T19:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2006\/02\/picture_this\/"},"modified":"2006-02-06T11:27:24","modified_gmt":"2006-02-06T19:27:24","slug":"picture_this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2006\/02\/picture_this.html","title":{"rendered":"PICTURE THIS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Muslim rioters offended by the 12 cartoons of Mohammed first published in Denmark &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2006\/WORLD\/asiapcf\/02\/06\/cartoon.protests\/index.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#0033399>rioters who went nuts<\/strong><\/font><\/a> because the content of the cartoons insulted their Prophet, but also because they believe it&#8217;s blasphemous to picture him at all &#8212; apparently don&#8217;t know or care that Mohammed has been depicted in their own historical and religious Muslim texts.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saudiaramcoworld.com\/issue\/198101\/a.history.of.the.world.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mohammed re-dedicating the Black Stone at the Kaaba, c. 1315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/Miniature%20of%20Prophet.jpg\" width=260 align=left border=0 \/><\/a>I&#8217;m quoting that from a friend&#8217;s e-mail message, though I don&#8217;t know where the information originated. But I think it&#8217;s reliable or I wouldn&#8217;t be posting it. The message came with an attached image, left, which shows a miniature of Mohammed re-dedicating the Black Stone at the Kaaba. It&#8217;s from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saudiaramcoworld.com\/issue\/198101\/a.history.of.the.world.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Jami Al-Tawarikh<\/strong><\/font><\/a> (&#8220;The Universal History&#8221; written by Rashid Al-Din), a manuscript in the Library of the University of Edinburgh; illustrated in Tabriz, Persia, c. 1315.<br \/>\nThe really weird information in the message may be less reliable, but I&#8217;m betting it&#8217;s accurate. Here it is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When a delegation of Danish imams went to the Middle East to <a href=\"http:\/\/counterterror.typepad.com\/the_counterterrorism_blog\/2006\/02\/fabricated_cart.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399> discuss the issue of the cartoons with senior officials and prominent Islamic scholars<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, the imams openly distributed a booklet that showed not only the original 12 cartoons, but <a href=\"http:\/\/bibelen.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/imams-showed-pedophile-mohamed.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>three fraudulent anti-Mohammed depictions that were much more offensive<\/strong><\/font><\/a> than the ones published in Denmark. It is now thought that these three bonus images are what ignited the outrage in the  Muslim world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The hotlinked references come from <a href=\"http:\/\/counterterror.typepad.com\/about.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>The  Counterterrorism Blog<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, a bigfoot site founded and edited by a corporate-cum-government consultant who describes it as &#8220;the first multi-expert blog dedicated solely to counterterrorism issues.&#8221; The mission statement says the site intends to serve as &#8220;a gateway to the community for policymakers and serious researchers&#8221; and is &#8220;designed to provide realtime information about terrorism cases and policy developments.&#8221; Maybe it does.<br \/>\n<strong>Postscript:<\/strong> Holy shit!
