It has very loose affiliations &#8230;&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/07\/30\/international\/europe\/30london.html?\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>he told reporters<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, following the arrest of four suspects, two seen below, in the failed July 21 bombings. I&#8217;m not sure which classic cell he was thinking of in which of <a href=\"http:\/\/members.tripod.com\/~greeneland\/biblio.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Greene&#8217;s books<\/font><\/strong><\/a> &#8212; the successful terrorist bombers in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0143039024\/qid=1122823836\/sr=8-2\/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl14\/102-8436091-4386549?v=glance&#038;s=books&#038;n=507846\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;The Quiet American&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> obviously come to mind &#8212; but I&#8217;m thinking of the one in <a href=\"http:\/\/members.tripod.com\/~greeneland\/consul.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;The Honorary Consul&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> because 1) it was tightly controlled, 2) it involved a major screw-up, and 3) bombing was not the mission.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/07\/30\/international\/europe\/30london.html?\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"july21bomberarrest.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/july21bomberarrest.jpg\" width=400><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Photo from Daily Mail, via Zuma Press<\/small><br \/>\nIn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0684871254\/qid=1122822471\/sr=2-1\/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1\/102-8436091-4386549\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;The Honorary Consul&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> a handful of Paraguayan terrorists slips into northern Argentina to kidnap the British ambassador during his visit to a sleepy provincial town. <a href=\"http:\/\/books.guardian.co.uk\/departments\/classics\/story\/0,6000,1252558,00.html#article_continue\" class=inline target=new\"> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"greenePHOTObySEANSMITH.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/greenePHOTObySEANSMITH.jpg\" width=100 align=right border=0 \/><\/a>The mission &#8212; on orders from El Tigre, a nasty nearly mythological figure who remains hidden in the Paraguayan jungle &#8212; is to hold the ambassador hostage and exchange him for several political prisoners. But the terrorists kidnap the wrong man. Their screw-up results in a much worse tragedy all around than if the operation had been a success. Big contrast there.
