May we draw your attention this morning to Adam Cohen&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/08\/27\/opinion\/27satt3.html?oref=login\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>signed editorial<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, which asks, &#8220;Is John Roberts Too Much of a Judicial Activist?&#8221; It begins with the case of a &#8220;hapless toad&#8221; and ends with a warning about toadying to the activism of conservative Supreme Court justices &#8220;intent on using new readings of the Consitution to take away rights.&#8221; They are far &#8220;more dangerous&#8221; than the liberal justices who allegedly create rights &#8220;like the right to privacy,&#8221; Cohen writes.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fantasticfiction.co.uk\/authors\/John_Le_Carre.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"JOHNleCARREfoto.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives\/JOHNleCARREfoto.jpg\" width=150 align=right border=0 \/><\/a> And by the way, does this sound like anything you&#8217;ve heard of lately?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He lived either in the darkness of the hood, or in the white light of the cells. There was no night or day, and to make it even more weird they kept the  noises going most of the time.<br \/>\nThey were working him on the production-line principle, he explained: no sleep, relays of questions, a lot of disorientation, a lot of muscle, till the interrogation became to him a slow race between going a bit dotty, as he called it, and breaking completely.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The passage comes from John le Carr&#233;&#8217;s 1974 novel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0394492196\/ref=ed_oe_h\/104-8180488-8402323?v=glance&#038;st=*\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> It&#8217;s Jim Prideaux describing his interrogation by Moscow Centre&#8217;s expert goons to George Smiley.<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re partial to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnlecarre.com\/profile.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>le Carr&#233;<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, above, who&#8217;s getting some play these days because of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theconstantgardener.com\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>new movie<\/strong><\/font><\/a> based on his 2000 novel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0743215052\/qid=112\n150407\/sr=1-3\/ref=sr_1_3\/104-8180488-8402323?v=glance&#038;s=books\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;The Constant Gardener.&#8221;<\/font><\/strong><\/a> Not having seen the movie &#8212; it opens Wednesday, directed by Fernando (&#8220;City of God&#8221;) Meirelles &#8212; we can&#8217;t say whether it&#8217;s any good.
