At the 11th hour, before a scheduled July 7 arbitration hearing, NPR agreed to compensate staff editor Tom Cole, a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, whose pay had been docked as a disciplinary measure without due process, in what AFTRA had charged was a violation of the union contract. NPR execs also agreed that AFTRA would have a say in future disciplinary actions against editorial staffers. No action was taken to reverse D&#8217;Arcy&#8217;s firing. He is a freelancer and not a union member, and thus had no standing in the case. &#8220;I&#8217;m not even roadkill,&#8221; he says. My bet, however, is that NPR hasn&#8217;t heard the last of him.
