{"id":1143,"date":"2005-06-21T09:56:12","date_gmt":"2005-06-21T16:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2005\/06\/aguileras_torture_music\/"},"modified":"2005-06-21T09:56:12","modified_gmt":"2005-06-21T16:56:12","slug":"aguileras_torture_music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2005\/06\/aguileras_torture_music.html","title":{"rendered":"AGUILERA&#8217;S &#8216;TORTURE&#8217; MUSIC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prompted by Time magazine&#8217;s <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/press_releases\/article\/0,8599,1071230,00.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><FONT color=#003399><B>Inside the Wire at Gitmo<\/B><\/FONT><\/A>, about<br \/>\nan interrogation at Guantanamo&#8217;s Camp X Ray in which a sleep-deprived prisoner is kept awake<br \/>\n&#8220;by dripping water on his head or playing Christina Aguilera music,&#8221; the legal eagle at <A\nclass=inline href=\"http:\/\/underneaththeirrobes.blogs.com\/about.html\" target='new\"'><FONT\ncolor=#003399><B>Underneath Their Robes<\/B><\/FONT><\/A> has filed a confidential opinion<br \/>\nthat asks, <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/underneaththeirrobes.blogs.com\/main\/2005\/06\/olc_opinion_chr.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><FONT color=#003399><B>Is Christina Aguilera&#8217;s Music<br \/>\n&#8220;Torture&#8221;?<\/B><\/FONT><\/A><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>This memorandum necessarily focuses on specific musical compositions by<br \/>\nAguilera and whether playing each individual song to an unwilling detainee might rise to the level<br \/>\nof torture.<br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/images\/AGUILERAcoveralbumPHOTO.jpg\"\nwidth=140 align=left border=0><\/A>That such analysis must proceed on an individualized,<br \/>\nsong-by-song basis does not restrict applicability of the principles set forth in this memorandum to<br \/>\nthe enumerated songs. Rather, the approach applied herein to specific songs from Aguilera&#8217;s latest<br \/>\nalbum is broadly applicable to the entirety of her artistic output, including her embarrassment of a<br \/>\nChristmas album, <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/My_Kind_of_Christmas\"\ntarget='new\"'><FONT color=#003399><B>My Kind of Christmas<\/B><\/FONT><\/A> (RCA<br \/>\nOct. 2000), and her unfortunate Spanish-language album, <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mi_Reflejo\" target='new\"<b'><FONT\ncolor=#003399><STRONG>Mi Reflejo<\/B><\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A> (RCA Sept. 2000),<br \/>\n[above], featuring &#8220;Genio Atrapado,&#8221; the Spanish version of her hit single <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.lyrics007.com\/Christina%20Aguilera%20Lyrics\/Genie%20in%20a%20Bottle%\n20Lyrics.html\" target='new\"'><B><\/FONT color=\"#003399\"><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Genie In<br \/>\na Bottle.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/FONT><\/A><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>Aguilera&#8217;s taunting lyrics have a certain <EM>je ne sais quoi<\/EM> when applied to Gitmo<br \/>\nprisoners under interrogation, though it&#8217;s not clear whether the songs were translated for them.<br \/>\nPart of &#8220;Genie In a Bottle&#8221; goes like this:<\/P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><i>Oh . . .<BR>I feel like I&#8217;ve been locked up tight<BR>For a century of lonely<br \/>\nnights<BR>Waiting for someone<BR>To release me<\/P><EM>You&#8217;re licking your lips and blowing kisses my way<BR>But that dont mean I&#8217;m gonna give it away<BR>Baby, baby,<br \/>\nbaby<BR>(baby, baby, baby)<BR><\/EM><\/I><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>The relationship between music and war goes back a <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.civilwarmusic.net\/history.php\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>long way<\/B><\/FONT><\/A>. Music has been used to stir both <A class=inlne\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.battlenotes.com\/Music_of_Patriotism.html\" target='new\"'><FONT\ncolor=#003399><B>patriotism<\/B><\/FONT><\/A> and <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/polsong.gcal.ac.uk\/articles\/mcnair3.html\" target='new\"'><FONT\ncolor=#003399><B>protest<\/B><\/FONT><\/A>. It&#8217;s been used both to raise troop morale and<br \/>\ndemoralize or frighten enemy forces. <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/pages.prodigy.net\/meng25\/mchs\/music.htm\" target='new\"'><FONT\ncolor=#003399><B>Music during the Vietnam war<\/B><\/FONT><\/A> was expecially notable.<br \/>\nMore recently, the U.S. military used &#8217;60s and &#8217;70s <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040401.shtml#76227\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>hard rock as a weapon<\/B><\/FONT><\/A> to<br \/>\nchallenge insurgents in Fallujah. I haven&#8217;t seen any legal opinions, real ones or parodies, on the<br \/>\nuse of pop culture in a military assault.
