A lady died this past January, and Citibank billed her for February and March
\nfor their annual service charges on her credit card, and then added late fees and interest on the
\nmonthly charge. The balance had been $0.00, and now is somewhere around $60.00. A family
\nmember placed a call to Citibank:

\nFamily Member:<\/STRONG> “I am calling to tell you that she died in
\nJanuary.”
Citibank:<\/STRONG> “The account was never closed and the late
\nfees and charges still apply.”
Family Member:<\/STRONG> “Maybe you should
\nturn it over to collections.”
Citibank:<\/STRONG> “Since it is two months past
\ndue, it already has been.” Family Family Member:<\/STRONG> “So, what will they
\ndo when they find out she is dead?”
Citibank:<\/STRONG> “Either report her
\naccount to the frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe
\nboth!”
Family Member:<\/STRONG> “Do you think God will be mad at
\nher?”
Citibank:<\/STRONG> “Excuse me?”

\nMember:<\/STRONG> “Did you just get what I was telling you . . the part about her being
\ndead?”
Citibank:<\/STRONG> “Sir, you’ll have to speak to my
\nsupervisor.”

\nSupervisor gets on the phone.<\/P>
\nFamily Member:<\/STRONG> “I’m calling to tell you, she died in
\nJanuary.”
Citibank:<\/STRONG> “The account was never closed and the late
\nfees and charges still apply.”
Family Member:<\/STRONG> “You mean you
\nwant to collect from her estate?”
Citibank:<\/STRONG> (stammering) “Are you
\nher lawyer?”
Family Member:<\/STRONG> “No, I’m her great nephew.”
\n(Lawyer info given)
Citibank:<\/STRONG> “Could you fax us a certificate of
\ndeath?”
Family Member:<\/STRONG> “Sure.” (Fax number
\ngiven)
After the fax was received:
Citibank:<\/STRONG>
\n“Our system just isn’t set up for death. I don’t know what more I can do to
\nhelp.”
Family Member:<\/STRONG> “Well, if you figure it out, great! If not,
\nyou could just keep billing her. I don’t think she will
\ncare.”
Citibank:<\/STRONG> “Well, the late fees and charges do still
\napply.”
Family Member:<\/STRONG> “Would you like her new billing
\naddress?”
Citibank:<\/STRONG> “That might help.”
