Be sure to cancel your credit cards before you die &#8212; just in case.&#8221;<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>A lady died this past January, and Citibank billed her for February and March<br \/>\nfor their annual service charges on her credit card, and then added late fees and interest on the<br \/>\nmonthly charge. The balance had been $0.00, and now is somewhere around $60.00. A family<br \/>\nmember placed a call to Citibank:<br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;I am calling to tell you that she died in<br \/>\nJanuary.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;The account was never closed and the late<br \/>\nfees and charges still apply.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Maybe you should<br \/>\nturn it over to collections.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Since it is two months past<br \/>\ndue, it already has been.&#8221; Family <STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;So, what will they<br \/>\ndo when they find out she is dead?&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Either report her<br \/>\naccount to the frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe<br \/>\nboth!&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Do you think God will be mad at<br \/>\nher?&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Excuse me?&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family<br \/>\nMember:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Did you just get what I was telling you . . the part about her being<br \/>\ndead?&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Sir, you&#8217;ll have to speak to my<br \/>\nsupervisor.&#8221;<BR><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Supervisor gets on the phone.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;I&#8217;m calling to tell you, she died in<br \/>\nJanuary.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;The account was never closed and the late<br \/>\nfees and charges still apply.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;You mean you<br \/>\nwant to collect from her estate?&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> (stammering) &#8220;Are you<br \/>\nher lawyer?&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;No, I&#8217;m her great nephew.&#8221;<br \/>\n(Lawyer info given)<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Could you fax us a certificate of<br \/>\ndeath?&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Sure.&#8221; (Fax number<br \/>\ngiven)<BR><BR>After the fax was received:<BR><BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG><br \/>\n&#8220;Our system just isn&#8217;t set up for death. I don&#8217;t know what more I can do to<br \/>\nhelp.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Well, if you figure it out, great! If not,<br \/>\nyou could just keep billing her. I don&#8217;t think she will<br \/>\ncare.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Well, the late fees and charges do still<br \/>\napply.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family Member:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Would you like her new billing<br \/>\naddress?&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;That might help.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family<br \/>\nMember:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Odessa Memorial Cemetery, Highway 129, Plot Number<br \/>\n69.&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Citibank:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Sir, that&#8217;s a cemetery!&#8221;<BR><STRONG>Family<br \/>\nMember:<\/STRONG> &#8220;What do you do with dead people on your<br \/>\nplanet?&#8221;<\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>Some urban myths are too good to believe but deserve to be spread.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A reader writes: &#8220;This is so priceless, and so easy to see happening, customer service being what it is today.
