Who cares. Coincidentally, here&#8217;s a review in<br \/>\ntoday&#8217;s Chicago Sun-Times of one Oscar non-winner&#8217;s latest memoir. Not exactly heavyweight<br \/>\nreviewing, but it pays for a few groceries. <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/output\/books\/sho-sunday-bacall27.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Lauren Bacall, still salty at 80&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A><br \/>\nbegins:<br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/A>When Lauren Bacall writes th<IMG\nsrc=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/images\/BACALLbymyselfandthensome.jpg\" width=120\nalign=right border=0><\/A>at her singing voice ranges &#8220;somewhere between B minus sharp and<br \/>\nouter space,&#8221; she&#8217;s being candid and funny. It&#8217;s not every stage star with two Tony Awards for<br \/>\nbest actress in a musical whose vocal talent offers so little promise. (OK, Harvey Fierstein<br \/>\nexcepted.) Still less would one admit it.<br \/>\n<P>But Bacall, who is one of a kind, always made the most of what she had, as this memoir<br \/>\nproves for the second time. The first time was more than a quarter century ago, when <I><I>By<br \/>\nMyself <\/I><\/I>was originally published to much praise, including a National Book Award.<br \/>\n<P>That memoir ended with the early 1980s, half a dozen years after her return to New York<br \/>\nfrom abroad and a decade after her divorce from her second husband, Jason Robards Jr. She had<br \/>\nmarried Robards after the death of her first husband, Humphrey Bogart, and a post-Bogie love<br \/>\naffair with Frank Sinatra, who&#8217;d asked her to marry him but suddenly &#8220;chickened out&#8221; (her term)<br \/>\nwhen his proposal made the gossip columns. Not that we&#8217;re keeping score, but let&#8217;s face it &#8212;<br \/>\nBacall certainly has &#8212; her serial love life is one of the most fascinating aspects of her<br \/>\ncareer<\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>Go read the rest.
