{"id":1026,"date":"2005-02-18T10:17:58","date_gmt":"2005-02-18T18:17:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2005\/02\/more_bad_apples\/"},"modified":"2005-02-18T10:17:58","modified_gmt":"2005-02-18T18:17:58","slug":"more_bad_apples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2005\/02\/more_bad_apples.html","title":{"rendered":"MORE &#8216;BAD APPLES&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>We&#8217;re all familiar with Dear Leader&#8217;s bogus claims, and those of his cronies, that torture of<br \/>\nprisoners (or if you prefer the euphemism, abuse) was limited to a few &#8220;bad apples&#8221; and that<br \/>\nsystemic torture was never, never the case.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Now comes major evidence in a new report in this morning&#8217;s London Guardian that &#8220;US<br \/>\nforces in Afghanistan engaged in widespread Abu Ghraib-style abuse, taking &#8216;trophy photographs&#8217;<br \/>\nof detainees and carrying out rape and sexual humiliation&#8221; &#8212; and then destroying the photos to<br \/>\ncover it up after the scandal in Iraq.  <\/P><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>According to the Guardian, documents it obtained &#8220;contain evidence that such abuses took<br \/>\nplace in the main detention centre at Bagram, near the capital Kabul, as well as at a smaller US<br \/>\ninstallation near the southern city of Kandahar.&#8221; Further:<\/P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>[P]hotographs taken in southern Afghanistan showing US soldiers from the<br \/>\n22nd Infantry Battalion posing in mock executions of blindfolded and bound detainees, were<br \/>\npurposely destroyed after the Abu Ghraib scandal to avoid &#8220;another public outrage&#8221;, the<br \/>\ndocuments show. &#8230;<br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>In a separate case, which the Guardian reveals today, two former prisoners of the US in<br \/>\nAfghanistan have come forward with claims against their American captors.<br \/>\n<P>In sworn affidavits to a British-American human rights lawyer, a Palestinian says he was<br \/>\nsodomised by American soldiers in Afghanistan. Another former prisoner of US forces, a<br \/>\nJordanian, describes a form of torture which involved being hung in a cage from a rope for<br \/>\ndays.<\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Go read the <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/afghanistan\/story\/0,1284,1417396,00.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>complete story<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>To my knowledge the evidence of systematic torture at Bagram, and the attempt to cover it<br \/>\nup, have yet to appear in the American press. Fancy that! I&#8217;m checking further. When I have more<br \/>\ndefinitive knowledge, I&#8217;ll post it.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Whoops, I take that back. It&#8217;s been reported all over. The Associated Press <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/national\/AP-Afghan-Abuse.html\"\ntarget='new\"<b'><STRONG><FONT color=#003399>has it<\/B><\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/A>.<br \/>\nReuters <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/reuters\/news\/news-iraq-abuse.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>has it<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>. The Boston Globe <A\nclass=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/world\/middleeast\/articles\/2005\/02\/18\/files_suggest_us_troop\ns_tried_to_hide_abuses\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>has it<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>.<br \/>\nThe New York Times <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/02\/18\/politics\/18abuse.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>has it<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>. The Washington Post <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A33178-2005Feb17.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>has it<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>. And <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/article\/0,,2-1488112,00.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>here&#8217;s one<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> in The Times of London.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The Guardian story and the rest are based on <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/SafeandFree\/SafeandFree.cfm?ID=17515&#038;c=206\"\ntarget='new\"<b'><STRONG><FONT color=#003399>information<br \/>\nreleased<\/B><\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/A> by the American Civil Liberties Union, which has<br \/>\nposted the <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/torturefoia\/released\/021605.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>incriminating documents here<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>.<br \/>\nThe 1,000 pages of &#8220;evidence from U.S. army investigations released to the American Civil<br \/>\nLiberties Union&#8221; about torture of prisoners in Iraq &#8212; to which the Guardian refers &#8212; have also<br \/>\nbeen reported on in the American press. The ACLU has dripped the documents out to generate a<br \/>\nhuge number of stories.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Meanwhile, have a look at <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/afghanistan\/story\/0,1284,1417225,00.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;&#8216;Nobody is talking,'&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> another<br \/>\nGuardian story this morning, which details how &#8220;9\/11 created the will for new, harsher<br \/>\ninterrogation techniques of foreign suspects by the US and led to the abuses in Guant\u00e1namo, Iraq,<br \/>\nAfghanistan and beyond.&#8221; Not incidentally, &#8220;it is the British who refined these methods and who<br \/>\nhave provided the precedent for legalised torture.&#8221;<br \/>\n<P>The story is occasioned by British publication of American journalist Mark Danner&#8217;s book,<br \/>\n<A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1590171527\/qid=1108743048\/sr=2-1\/ref=pd_\nka_b_2_1\/103-5767698-7222227\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Torture and<br \/>\nTruth,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> and another book, <A class=inlne\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0521853249\/qid=1108743147\/sr=1-1\/ref=\nsr_1_1\/103-5767698-7222227?v=glance&#038;s=books\" target='new\"'><\/B><FONT\ncolor=#003399><STRONG>&#8220;The Torture Papers,&#8221;<\/B><\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A> edited by<br \/>\ntwo American lawyers, Karen Greenberg and Joshua Dratel. Both books have been reported on in<br \/>\nthe American press.
