{"id":332,"date":"2010-09-07T19:50:28","date_gmt":"2010-09-07T19:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/gap\/wp\/?p=332"},"modified":"2010-09-07T19:50:28","modified_gmt":"2010-09-07T19:50:28","slug":"music_during_wartime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/gap\/2010\/09\/music_during_wartime\/","title":{"rendered":"Music During Wartime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> I&#8217;m not usually a sentimentalist, but after slogging through recent weeks of news rich with intolerance and violence (I&#8217;ll spare you the litany of links), this vet&#8217;s story of music and humanity sneaked into my Google reader thanks to a friend and provided a glimmer of, well, <i>hope<\/i> in the midst of what all too often feels like an endlessly horrific news cycle.<\/p>\n<p><center><object height=\"306\" width=\"500\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/QJynOWktP7U?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;hd=1\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/QJynOWktP7U?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;hd=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" height=\"306\" width=\"500\"><\/object><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Towards the end of the clip, he states his name as Jack LeRoy Tueller, and a little searching turns up <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2009\/US\/11\/05\/vif2.pilot.trumpet\/?imw=Y\">this CNN news item<\/a> which offers a more detailed account of Jack&#8217;s narrative than the video provides. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standard.net\/topics\/features\/2010\/03\/05\/telling-world-war-iis-untold-stories\">newspaper account<\/a> seems to indicate that the clip is part of a larger &#8220;Utah World War II Stories&#8221; series filmed by local PBS affiliate KUED. Search results also turn up a <a href=\"www.kued.org\/productions\/worldwar2\/untoldStories\/JackTueller.pdf\">33-page interview<\/a> conducted by KUED, if you really find yourself engaged by Jack and his stories. My own Papa having passed on, I admit I&#8217;m working my way through the transcript.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for sharing, Col.
