{"id":26,"date":"2008-05-30T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-05-30T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/gap\/wp\/?p=26"},"modified":"2008-05-30T10:00:00","modified_gmt":"2008-05-30T10:00:00","slug":"selling_out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/gap\/2008\/05\/selling_out\/","title":{"rendered":"Selling Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"justify\">by guest blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.automaticheartbreak.com\/\">Corey Dargel<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, I was one of the featured composers\/performers on the ASCAP Foundation&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascap.com\/eventsawards\/events\/thruthewalls\/\"><i>Thru The Walls<\/i><\/a> concert series.&nbsp; The initial plan, devised by curator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marthamooke.com\/\">Martha Mooke<\/a> and members of the ASCAP Concert Music staff, was to have Marc Anthony Thompson (aka <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asthmatickitty.com\/musicians.php?artistID=5\">Chocolate Genius<\/a>) M.C. the concert.&nbsp; Unfortunately, that fell through shortly before the concert happened.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SellingOutPic.gif\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/gap\/SellingOutPic.gif\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" height=\"240\" width=\"300\" \/><\/span>What would happen if new-music concerts were M.C.-ed by artists who have their feet firmly planted in the indie-pop\/rock world?&nbsp; Among other things, I think it would counter the viewpoints of some new-music connoisseurs that pop\/rock musicians have no interest in adventurous art-music.&nbsp; My experience has led me to believe that this is patently false.&nbsp; Sure, there are some who couldn&#8217;t care less, but I think that many pop\/rock artists are well-versed in contemporary art music.&nbsp; They would probably be happy to lend their star-power to advocating for us less-commercially-oriented (or less-commercially-embraced) composers.<\/p>\n<p>We should approach songwriters like Chocolate Genius, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sufjan.com\/\">Sufjan Stevens<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xiuxiu.org\/\">Jamie Stewart<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suzannevega.com\/\">Suzanne Vega<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewbird.net\/\">Andrew Bird<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joanna_Newsom\">Joanna Newsom<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/remhq.com\/\">Michael Stipe<\/a>, and others.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; These are all people who have been explicit about their interest in present-day composers and improvisers.&nbsp; Maybe they&#8217;ll turn us down.&nbsp; Maybe plans will fall through at the last minute like with the Thru The Walls concert.&nbsp; Maybe we won&#8217;t be able to pay them enough.&nbsp; Maybe we&#8217;ll be accused of selling out.&nbsp; (Maybe we&#8217;ll literally sell out.)&nbsp; But, really, I can think of no significant reason why we shouldn&#8217;t try this.&nbsp; Can you?
