{"id":3396,"date":"2016-07-25T16:00:02","date_gmt":"2016-07-25T20:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/fieldnotes\/?p=3396"},"modified":"2016-07-15T15:35:38","modified_gmt":"2016-07-15T19:35:38","slug":"community-an-etymology-of-sorts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/fieldnotes\/2016\/07\/community-an-etymology-of-sorts\/","title":{"rendered":"Community: An etymology of sorts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Being happily nerdy, I immediately went for the etymology of the word <em>community.<br \/>\n<\/em>I got <em>comuner,<\/em>\u00a0<strong>&#8220;to make common, share&#8221;<\/strong>;\u00a0<em>comun,\u00a0<\/em><strong>&#8220;to talk intimately&#8221;<\/strong>; and <em>commun, <\/em><strong>&#8220;free city, group of citizens&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also, <strong>&#8220;shared by all&#8221;<\/strong>, <strong>&#8220;held in common.&#8221;<\/strong> (<em>co<\/em> = <strong>together<\/strong>, <em>mun-i<\/em> = <strong>change<\/strong>, <strong>exchange<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>And the second element is also at the root of Latin <em>munia, <\/em>which means <strong>&#8220;duties, public duties, functions&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think this pretty much sums it up:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Community<\/em><\/strong><em> is<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>a place that we <strong>hold in common<\/strong><\/em> (this can include physical place, geographic location, as well as principles, history, resources),<em> a place where we take initiative to make\u00a0<strong>changes <\/strong>and <strong>share <\/strong>with each other<\/em>. <strong><em>Community <\/em><\/strong><em>as a <strong>free city <\/strong><\/em>(highlighting importance of autonomy) <em>where each citizen has <strong>duties and functions. <\/strong>And finally, a community must be a place where people are comfortable <strong>to talk intimately<\/strong>, to befriend, to support, to grieve and to celebrate <strong>together.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>And to add a little absurdity, here&#8217;s an accompanying video:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FWKcozQByWA?rel=0&amp;controls=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Being happily nerdy, I immediately went for the etymology of the word community.
