{"id":2587,"date":"2015-03-23T23:30:45","date_gmt":"2015-03-24T03:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/fieldnotes\/?p=2587"},"modified":"2015-03-23T17:06:44","modified_gmt":"2015-03-23T21:06:44","slug":"an-arts-advocacy-conversation-in-salt-lake-city-ut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/fieldnotes\/2015\/03\/an-arts-advocacy-conversation-in-salt-lake-city-ut\/","title":{"rendered":"An Arts Advocacy Conversation in Salt Lake City, UT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The <a href=\"http:\/\/umfa.utah.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Utah Museum of Fine Arts<\/a> represents an arts institution that sits within and reports to an institution run by folks outside the field &#8211; The University of Utah.\u00a0A staff member of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts speaks with University President, David Pershing on he views and values the arts.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>When I say \u201cthe arts,\u201d what does that mean to you?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The term, \u201cthe arts,\u201d symbolizes to me all that is stimulating to the sense in a profound way in the performing arts \u2013 from beautiful music (a single voice or a choir, or a single instrument or an orchestra, to an interesting visual piece (a painting, a drawing, a photograph, or a sculpture), to collaborative art (as seen on the big screen of \u201clive\u201d at the theater).<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Where do you see arts in your community?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">At the University of Utah, we are lucky to have some real \u201cgems\u201d as part of our campus that showcase art in its various forms: the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Pioneer Theatre Company, the Natural History Museum of Utah, Red Butte Gardens, David Gardner Hall, Kingsbury Hall, which showcase art in a variety of forms. Additionally, faculty often showcase their art in any number of the buildings on campus, so I don\u2019t have to travel far to enjoy art.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Tell me about a moment you connected with arts personally.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">My strongest art moment was the first time I saw <em>Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em> as a young man. Over the years, I have seen the play multiple times, and I love theater in the West End (London).
