This week we will be\u00a0featuring\u00a0conversations with leaders working in communities.\u00a0<\/span>Scott Burkholder<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>is an entrepreneurial minded, art promoting engineer based in Baltimore. He oversaw the business side of the Baltimore Love Project, the largest self initiated public art project in Baltimore and is currently working on utilizing art as a tool to teach empathy. Inspired by his teaching experience as an eleventh grade\u00a0English\u00a0teacher with Teach for America,<\/span><\/em>\u00a0Ali Fadlallah<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0merged his passions for music and arts education by founding Personality Music, a creative initiative that\u00a0uses music and the arts to create positive social change.<\/em><\/p>\n

 
\nI have yet to meet Ali Fadlallah face to face but I full heartedly consider him part of my community. It is an interesting thought that community transcends the physical, but it is something that I believe each one of the fellows knows to be true. The transcendence of community has made my initial CCF relationships rich. It will likely serve as great foundation for powerful conversations and building meaningful things.

\nSeveral weeks ago Ali and I were partnered to have a conversation about our thoughts on creative placemaking. Between the lines I read encouragement to find new boundaries. Over the course of several phone calls and the wonders of google, Ali and I certainly explored common territory but we also found some edges. We would welcome you to glimpse some of our process<\/a><\/strong>, and hope that you enjoy the product of community working together. Please note that Ali did the heavy lifting with his word-smithing talents, I just jumped when told to do so…<\/p>\n

Creative Placemaking<\/h2>\n

\nCulture, entrepreneurship, creativity, art.<\/p>\n

The topics go on \u2026 where shall we start?<\/p>\n

We\u2019re building communities, we\u2019re playing a part\u2026<\/p>\n

We\u2019re posing question after question from the heart:<\/p>\n

Is a community more than a neighborhood\/geographical space?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Neighborhoods and spaces depend on unique faces<\/p>\n

Who share experiences or tastes, becomes the tie like laces<\/p>\n

Remove this shared experience you lose community, tasteless<\/p>\n

Thus we transcend the races and the pavement, build a basis<\/p>\n

Rooted in unity. Hence we commune!<\/p>\n

Why are there so many communities? Do we need them?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Church community. A community of bikers. Job-search community. Community of hikers.<\/p>\n

There are countless community, well because the, theory is\u2026<\/p>\n

We share a community when we share an experience!<\/p>\n

What role do cultural entrepreneurs play?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And so we turn to the trailblazers. The Artrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

When creativity\u2019s stripped we\u2019re seeing fewer and fewer<\/p>\n

But art is ever evolving, ideas newer and newer<\/p>\n

Thus we turn to the specialists, who specialize in renewal.<\/p>\n

The cultural entrepreneurs\u2026<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t entrepreneurs only pursue making money?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Transcend the ideas of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

They bring an extra bottom to the line, now there\u2019s a newer ship<\/p>\n

Sailing toward social good that event corporates have boarded.<\/p>\n

Cause there was a hole in the soul of that first ship which hoarded<\/p>\n

All the money. Money! Money! It oughta make you think<\/p>\n

A sole focus on the money is enough to make you sink. (and stink!)<\/p>\n

Can a community benefit from an entrepreneur in residence? How?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now these ships multiply, but these ships need a guide.<\/p>\n

Captain who can lead, not just demand an \u201caye aye!\u201d<\/p>\n

Lead from behind, introduce a new piece of the pie<\/p>\n

Introduce person X to Y, Y to Z, what a surprise!<\/p>\n

Now the network is bigger, but the world is smaller<\/p>\n

The ideas more abundant, the list of followers taller<\/p>\n

The captain shows us that progress is always possible!<\/p>\n

Communities are never obsolete they overcome the obstacles<\/p>\n

What is the big deal about creative placemaking?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thus a sense of responsibility we adopt<\/p>\n

For on Creative Avenue there\u2019s many stops<\/p>\n

And for each of these great places we\u2019re stoppin\u2019<\/p>\n

You have cultural entrepreneurs who opt in\u2026<\/p>\n

Opting into ownership, showcasing the showmanship<\/p>\n

Contemporary as tomorrow or classical as Roman Lit<\/p>\n

Has creative place making been “sold out”?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And in an age of selling soul how do we be bold now?<\/p>\n

Who can do creative place making?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And do we compete like place-taking<\/p>\n

In a race to rise like cakes baking?<\/p>\n

to the top\u2026<\/p>\n

Or do we not?<\/p>\n

Do we create communities instead?<\/p>\n

And account for the unfed<\/p>\n

Starving for new art, a new start, a new thread<\/p>\n

of ideas…<\/p>\n

Where does a cultural entrepreneur’s journey begin?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps with these ideas we begin…<\/p>\n

We pry them out from within<\/p>\n

What is the philosophy of a cultural entrepreneur?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And pledge to make a place where true expressions ascend<\/p>\n

To the communities throne<\/p>\n

Little pay, little glory, and many failings; why would anyone want to push culture?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For otherwise we risk clones.<\/p>\n

Not celebrating our own<\/p>\n

Individuality comprised:<\/p>\n

Not growing; (was grown)\u2026<\/p>\n

Not sewing; was sewn;<\/p>\n

Not knowing; not known;<\/p>\n

Not showing; not shown;<\/p>\n

And so we realize that our biggest risk is not risking for each other<\/p>\n

to be left (unsafely) alone.<\/p>\n

Why would anyone want to get into the culture industry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In other words our other words must be heard;<\/p>\n

Brave voices bore shepherds from the herd…<\/p>\n

Is there a benefit to the toil of a cultural entrepreneur?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For from the undergrounds depths of that soil<\/p>\n

A creativity is bred from the toil<\/p>\n

Who reaps the value of a cultural enterprise?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just as struggle brings creativity, so creativity breathes life<\/p>\n

Into the lifeless, Now those with strife are on strike<\/p>\n

Or those with passions are chasing<\/p>\n

And those with problems are facing<\/p>\n

Miseducated feel bright<\/p>\n

The underrated take flight<\/p>\n

The cultural sector has a system and a man just like any other sector, who is going to change that, and how?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And now a movement spurs acting out of spirit, no spite.<\/p>\n

For the fight of the poor musn\u2019t be the plight of the privileged<\/p>\n

Why does the cultural sector need people who push the envelope?<\/strong><\/p>\n

But instead to say we have diversity, art, a culture to live with<\/p>\n

Amongst us all…<\/p>\n

Has the cultural sector welcomed you to the family?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stand tall<\/p>\n

Introduce yourself<\/p>\n

Would you say a cultural entrepreneur is a black sheep?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you stay true to you<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll never lose your wealth<\/p>\n

So be yourself, be unique, they may call you a black sheep<\/p>\n

Perhaps you\u2019re just a shepherd disguised\u2026.<\/p>\n
