{"id":5851,"date":"2020-02-24T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-24T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/engage\/?p=5851"},"modified":"2020-02-11T09:56:43","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T14:56:43","slug":"why-and-how","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/engage\/2020\/02\/why-and-how\/","title":{"rendered":"Why and How"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"267\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/engage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/BookCoversSmall.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5853\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><strong>A couple of months ago, a new reader of one of my books got in touch to say \u201cI haven\u2019t finished it yet because I\u2019m constantly having to digest the \u2018YES\u2019 and \u2018AMEN\u2019 moments I get from each section.\u201d<\/strong> She, like many passionate new readers, went on to ask why they and their colleagues had not heard of the books before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The blame, of course, is on us at ArtsEngaged\u00ae. <em>Building Communities, Not Audiences: The Future of the Arts in the United States <\/em>(2012) and<em> Engage Now! A Guide to Making the Arts Indispensable <\/em>(2015) have sold pretty well exclusively through word-of-mouth \u201cadvertising.\u201d We&#8217;ve not bothered beyond that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Now, we&#8217;re hoping to make a (very) small stab at correcting that. We&#8217;ve got a couple of ads we&#8217;re hoping to run. And this is my ICYMI blog post for any reader who is not aware of the books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">What has been truly remarkable, as suggested above, is the level of enthusiasm the books have generated. <strong>Readers frequently say they give voice to their concerns about the future of the arts and provide practical means of developing relationships between arts organizations and their communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><em>Building Communities, Not Audiences<\/em> focuses on why community engagement is critical to the future of the arts; <em>Engage Now!<\/em> presents an overview of means to foster arts-community connections.
