It&#8217;s &#8220;finally&#8221; because he has been an outsized presence there for decades<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/james-levines-accomplishment-at-the-met\">, as Alex Ross writes,<\/a> completely remaking the orchestra into one of the country&#8217;s best. But he&#8217;s been ill for years, and, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/style\/wp\/2016\/04\/14\/met-opera-announces-levines-departure-long-overdue\/\">Anne Midgette notes<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cIt wasn\u2019t just the illnesses, but the constant alternation between concealment and an excess of revelation that kept so much attention focused on them and away from the music.\u201d Almost overlooked in the Levine announcement was another major Lincoln Center departure with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/15\/arts\/music\/lincoln-center-president-is-stepping-down.html\">abrupt resignation of President Jed Bernstein<\/a>, who had been in the job for only two years.<\/li>\n<li class=\"entry-footer\"><strong>Groundbreaking &#8220;Hamilton&#8221; Broadway Deal:<\/strong> Investing in Broadway has always been a risky bet, not the least for performers who help workshop and develop shows. This week the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/16\/theater\/hamilton-producers-and-actors-reach-deal-on-sharing-profits.html\">producers of &#8220;Hamilton&#8221; agreed to include actors and dancers who helped create the show in profit sharing <\/a>(which should be considerable).\u00a0\u201cThe deal, which was announced by a lawyer representing more than two dozen actors and dancers who were part of the show\u2019s development and first productions, is a major victory for the cast and could have ripple effects in the theater industry, where the huge success of \u201cHamilton,\u201d and the lack of profit-sharing, catalyzed a growing debate about actor compensation.\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"entry-footer\"><strong>What on earth is happening at Romania&#8217;s National Ballet?<\/strong> The company&#8217;s director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/famous-danish-choreographer-resigns-from-the-romanian-national-ballet-company-after-management-scandal\/168591\/\">removed the artistic director<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/13\/arts\/dance\/romanian-ballet-companyloses-its-leading-lights.html\">company&#8217;s two biggest stars quit<\/a>\u00a0and the tumult exploded in public. Then <a href=\"http:\/\/adevarul.ro\/cultura\/arte\/angajatii-romani-balerinii-straini-afara-tara-alina-cojoaru-plans-fata-operei-nationale-1_570d1faa5ab6550cb8e9975f\/index.html\">star ballerina\u00a0Alina Cojocaru erupted in tears, 30 dancers threatened to quit, and staffers screamed \u2018foreigners out of the country!\u2019<\/a>\u00a0By late in the week Romania&#8217;s Prime Minister and Culture Minister<a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.ro\/cultura-media\/dacian-ciolos-catre-alina-cojocaru-ca-agronom-stiu-ca-pentru-ca-o-samanta-a-schimbarii-sa-incolteasca-pamantul-trebuie-bine-pregatit-udat-chiar-cu-lacrimi-1922404514002016041615428989\"> threatened to intervene<\/a>. But by the end of the week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.ro\/cultura-media\/opera-nationala-bucuresti-este-nevoita-sa-anuleze-spectacolele-giselle-si-la-fille-mal-gard-e-in-urma-plecarii-lui-johan-kobborg-1922405415002016041315429551\">productions and a gala had been canceled<\/a>, and the company was in shambles.<\/li>\n<li class=\"entry-footer\"><strong>Why should we assume that machine intelligence will work like human intelligence?<\/strong> Thus the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/technology\/future_tense\/2016\/04\/why_it_s_a_mistake_to_compare_a_i_with_human_intelligence.html\">fears of some who work with machines<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cThe entire discourse around A.I. implicitly presupposes the superiority of E.I.\u201d \u2013 evolved intelligence, i.e., the human and animal kind. \u201cMuch of the dystopian hysteria around A.I. reflects the fear that it will act as humans act (which is to say violently, selfishly, emotionally, and at times irrationally) \u2013 only it will have more capacity. In essence, much of what we fear is a much more competent E.I.\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"entry-footer\"><strong><a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/bookforum.com\/inprint\/023_01\/15797\" rel=\"bookmark\" data-wpel-target=\"_new\">\u201cCreativity\u201d Is Being Packaged Up As A Path To Success.
