Why?\u00a0\u201cI want to regain my freedom and I want to create,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This job, as it exists today, is not something I want.&#8221; Paris Ballet lifer\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/speakeasy\/2016\/02\/04\/aurelie-dupont-is-named-director-of-paris-opera-ballet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aur\u00e9lie Dupont\u00a0takes over<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">. AI uses neural nest, and scientists aren&#8217;t exactly sure why they work, but they do. &#8220;Artificial intelligence is the future of Google Search, and if it\u2019s the future of Google Search, it\u2019s the future of so much more.\u201d Back to humans for a moment. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/31\/opinion\/sunday\/how-to-raise-a-creative-child-step-one-back-off.html\" target=\"_blank\">How do you raise creative kids?<\/a> Fewer rules. \u201cCreativity may be hard to nurture, but it\u2019s easy to thwart. By limiting rules, parents encouraged their children to think for themselves. And scientists say that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-have-found-a-technique-that-helps-you-learn-new-skills-twice-as-fast\" target=\"_blank\">simple practice won&#8217;t make you a good artist<\/a>. \u201cThe research goes somewhat against the old assumption that simply repeating a motor skill over and over again \u2013 for example, practising scales on the piano or playing the same level on your game over and over again \u2013 was the best way to master it. Finally, it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2016\/02\/adam-grant-originals-uber-for-x\/459321\/\" target=\"_blank\">important how you introduce new ideas.<\/a> &#8220;To generate creative ideas, it\u2019s important to start from an unusual place. But to explain those ideas, they have to be connected to something familiar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>This Week in Audience, Audience, Who&#8217;s Got The\u00a0Audience:<\/strong> There are so many ways that people watch TV shows these days that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/wp\/2016\/02\/02\/what-counts-as-a-hit-tv-show-these-days-dont-worry-even-the-experts-have-no-idea\/\" target=\"_blank\">television industry has no idea<\/a> how to measure whether a show is a hit.\u00a0\u201cNielsen, the 93-year-old company that has long operated an effective monopoly over television ratings in the United States, is facing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/03\/business\/media\/nielsen-playing-catch-up-as-tv-viewing-habits-change-and-digital-rivals-spring-up.html\" target=\"_blank\">blistering criticism <\/a>from TV and advertising executives who see it as a relic of television\u2019s rabbit-ears past as the digital revolution transforms how people consume entertainment. Part of the complication? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/wp\/2016\/01\/29\/what-we-learned-from-the-giant-list-of-1400-tv-shows-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">There are now 1400 (fourteen hundred!) TV shows<\/a>. What&#8217;s to be learned by the data we do have? Meanwhile,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/how-youtube-aims-persuade-millennials-861412\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube is trying to figure out how to cash in<\/a>. \u201cYouTube execs hesitate to compare their efforts to Netflix, Hulu or Amazon, but Red gives the streamer, which boasts more than 1 billion viewers, a foothold in the lucrative paid video business.&#8221; On a smaller (but significant) scale,\u00a0small <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-35481675\" target=\"_blank\">London theatres seem to be thriving<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cHow do you engage with your community and how do you diversify your audience? But I think it\u2019s especially true in London which is growing so quickly and the population is changing all the time.\u201d But London&#8217;s National Theatre is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-35481675\" target=\"_blank\">downsizing<\/a>, even as it commits to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestage.co.uk\/news\/2016\/national-theatre-commits-to-gender-equality-by-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\">attaining gender parity by 2021<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Easiest Way To Get Attention For Your Show? Try To Ban The Press:<\/strong>\u00a0That&#8217;s what the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/arts\/culture\/la-et-cm-wooster-group-harold-pinter-room-20160127-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Harold Pinter estate tried to do<\/a> for a new Wooster Group production of &#8220;The Room&#8221; in Los Angeles. Cue <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/30\/theater\/pinter-estate-shuts-door-on-the-room.html\" target=\"_blank\">consternation<\/a>.\u00a0Was it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americantheatre.org\/2016\/02\/03\/a-pause-to-consider-the-wooster-pinter-kerfuffle\/\" target=\"_blank\">about money<\/a>? And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hesherman.com\/2016\/02\/03\/peeking-inside-the-wooster-groups-off-limits-room\/\" target=\"_blank\">outrage<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s no other kind of journalism where the journalist says, \u2018Is it OK if I report this kind of story?\u2019\u201d And then the inevitable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/arts\/la-et-cm-pinter-room-review-20160206-column.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;non&#8221;-review<\/a> in the LA Times. Case closed? Not quite, as the same rights-holder tries to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestranger.com\/blogs\/slog\/2016\/02\/05\/23534251\/samuel-french-tries-to-shut-down-thatswhatshesaid-an-hour-before-curtain\" target=\"_blank\">shut down another play in Seattle<\/a> with one-hour&#8217;s notice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gallery owner Ann Freedman is\u00a0accused<\/strong> of &#8220;selling fake Rothkos for millions of dollars\u2014and using false citations to authenticate them.&#8221; But in an art market governed largely by pretense and money, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/02\/05\/why-it-s-so-hard-to-spot-a-fake-rothko-even-for-his-son.html\" target=\"_blank\">does a masterpiece have any intrinsic value?<\/a>&#8221; So fakes. Fakes are getting so good,\u00a0\u201cone can imagine a near-future museum with every important artwork in the world \u2013 the entire contents of E H Gombrich\u2019s 1950 classic The Story of Art \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/aeon.co\/essays\/is-there-a-place-for-fakery-in-art-galleries-and-museums\" target=\"_blank\">made manifest in a single super-didactic replica collection<\/a>. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as no one feels fooled.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>And a few leftovers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2016\/feb\/04\/cbso-appoints-mirga-grazinyte-tyla-music-director-birmingham-symphony\" target=\"_blank\">City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra appoints 29-year-old Mirga Gra\u017einyt\u0117-Tyla<\/a><\/strong> (just call her Mirga), who is the LA Phil&#8217;s dynamic assistant conductor as its new music director. Cue applause and congratulation (and compare this to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.therestisnoise.com\/2016\/01\/jaap-van-zweden-to-the-phil.html\" target=\"_blank\"> the reception <\/a>to the New York Philharmonic&#8217;s new music director appointment).<\/li>\n<li><strong><a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/catherine-orer\/7-mistakes-that-are-keepi_b_9106054.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"bookmark\" data-wpel-target=\"_new\">Seven Myths Of The Starving Artist<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThe starving artist myth is a limiting belief that\u2019s been passed on from generation to generation and it\u2019s about time we put an end to it.
