If so, let me know &#8211; I went looking this week and found&#8230; nothing.<\/p>\n<p>But here here are some highlights from the 172 stories we did find:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The New York Philharmonic Chooses a New Music Director and the Reaction is&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong>He&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jaap_van_Zweden\" target=\"_blank\">Jaap van Zweden<\/a>, 55, a Dutch conductor currently music director of the Dallas Symphony. New York Times music critic Anthony Tommasini called the choice\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/28\/arts\/jaap-van-zweden-and-the-future-of-the-new-york-philharmonic.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;safe&#8221; but &#8220;feisty<\/a>.&#8221; Anne Midgette in the Washington Post\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/style\/wp\/2016\/01\/27\/new-york-philharmonic-taps-new-music-director\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>: &#8220;What the New York Philharmonic more urgently lacked under Gilbert was a dynamic, charismatic figure able to galvanize excitement around the orchestra\u2019s concerts. It\u2019s not clear that van Zweden fully offers that.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/jaap-van-zweden-new-york-philharmonic\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Ross was also conflicted<\/a>: &#8220;Bernstein aside, the players\u00a0have preferred terse, to-the-point types. This prejudice rules out more than a few significant figures. From the limited ranks of the available, the willing, the tolerated, and the marketable, van Zweden has emerged the victor.&#8221; Meanwhile, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/lifestyles\/arts\/headlines\/20160127-jaap-van-zwedens-departure-from-dso-signals-new-phase-in-dallas-arts.ece\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Morning News notes<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">that van Zweden hugely elevated the playing of the Dallas Symphony in his time there.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong>In other major appointments this week:<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/entertainment\/museums\/ct-new-art-institute-president-20160128-column.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Art Institute of Chicago<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">chooses a new director, as does the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/arts\/art-and-architecture\/ago-names-stephan-jost-as-new-director\/article28415770\/\" target=\"_blank\">Art Gallery of Ontario<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">This Week in &#8220;What Do Audiences Want&#8221;?<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chartattack.com\/news\/2016\/01\/20\/old-music-is-outselling-new-music-for-the-first-time-in-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">For the first time, old recordings outsold new releases in 2015<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">.\u00a0This despite the massive popularity of Adele&#8217;s new album late in the year. When all of recorded music is available on demand anywhere, it&#8217;s not surprising that the back catalogue becomes more valuable.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2016\/01\/relativity-media-ryan-kavanaugh-c-v-r.html\" target=\"_blank\">The audience will not be taken for granted by an algorithm<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">. In 2004\u00a0Ryan Kavanaugh took Hollywood by storm by\u00a0coming up with a way to predict audience taste with\u00a0math. It didn&#8217;t turn out so well.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vrtxmag.com\/articles\/why-isnt-jazz-popular\/\" target=\"_blank\">Why Isn\u2019t Jazz More Popular? Could It Be The Jazz Police?<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0Trying to make this music fit into a neat little box just can\u2019t happen. And that\u2019s tough for some people. We crave definitions for our art, and when we can\u2019t describe or compare it, many get frustrated. Hence, the Jazz Police.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>So You Want To Be Creative. Here&#8217;s What We Know So Far<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/bluesky\/originals\/ct-leading-creatives-kelly-leonard-bsi-20160125-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Here are the absolute must-haves:<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> \u201cCreative individuals suffer, and there are myriad problems to be solved. That is, fractals of fractals are created.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>This Week in Diversity<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/29\/arts\/new-york-arts-organizations-lack-the-diversity-of-their-city.html\" target=\"_blank\">Surprise! (Maybe Not)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0It turns out New York&#8217;s arts community isn&#8217;t nearly so diverse as the city itself.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/createquity.com\/2016\/01\/are-you-better-off-today-than-you-were-15-years-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diversity of Income:<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> It&#8217;s very difficult to say whether artists are doing better economically than they were doing 15 years ago. There are more artists and many are making a living. But incomes are more unstable, and it&#8217;s frustrating trying to make sense of the data.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>JUST FOR FUN<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Speaking of Alex Ross<\/strong>\u00a0if you haven&#8217;t read his tribute to <strong>Pierre Boulez<\/strong> this week, it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2016\/01\/25\/the-magus-musical-events-alex-ross\" target=\"_blank\">one of the best reads of the week<\/a>\u00a0and well worth the click.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americantheatre.org\/2016\/01\/26\/playwrights-and-tv-its-not-just-about-the-money\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Playwrights are torn:<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u201cFor the bulk of my life, \u201cTV writer\u201d has been a gentle euphemism for \u201cfailed playwright.\u201d A serious theatre person would barely admit to having a television, much less watching one.
