The University of Michigan Press says it will<a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2009\/03\/23\/michigan\"> move from paper to pixels<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Michigan officials say that their move reflects a belief that it&#8217;s time<br \/>\nto stop trying to make the old economics of scholarly publishing work.<br \/>\n&#8220;I have been increasingly convinced that the business model based on<br \/>\nprinted monograph was not merely failing but broken,&#8221; said Phil<br \/>\nPochoda, director of the Michigan press. &#8220;Why try to fight your way<br \/>\nthrough this? Why try to remain in territory you know is doomed?<br \/>\nScholarly presses will be primarily digital in a decade. Why not seize<br \/>\nthe opportunity to do it now?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"kindle.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.artsjournal.com\/diacritical\/kindle.jpg?resize=200%2C198\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt; float: left;\" width=\"200\" height=\"198\" \/><\/span>It&#8217;s a recognition of the inefficiencies of paper. Recently it was reported that it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/c\/a\/2009\/02\/01\/MNCD15KF5L.DTL\">costs $10 per copy<\/a> just to deliver the San Francisco Chronicle Sunday edition to subscribers. And then there&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/2009\/1\/printing-the-nyt-costs-twice-as-much-as-sending-every-subscriber-a-free-kindle\"> this story<\/a> from back in January:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;it costs the<i> [New York] Times<\/i> about twice as much money to print and deliver the<br \/>\nnewspaper over a year as it would cost to send each of its subscribers<br \/>\na brand new Amazon Kindle instead.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Newspapers aren&#8217;t the only ones contemplating a digital future.
