{"id":1123,"date":"2017-08-07T08:49:08","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T12:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/?p=1123"},"modified":"2017-08-07T08:56:12","modified_gmt":"2017-08-07T12:56:12","slug":"sunrise-sunset-and-subjective-connections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/2017\/08\/sunrise-sunset-and-subjective-connections.html","title":{"rendered":"Sunrise, Sunset and Subjective Connections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sunset-288531_1280.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1124\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sunset-288531_1280-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sunset-288531_1280-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sunset-288531_1280-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sunset-288531_1280-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/sunset-288531_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Can we name a universal aesthetic experience, one that all peoples around the globe have encountered from the beginning of humanity to the present?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 But if we wanted to come close, we could do worse than the daily occurrences of sunrise and sunset.\u00a0 The size of the sun, the colors that surround it, the length of the shadows that engulf us as we watch: how many trillions of times have those converging phenomena moved a human being to stop in his or her tracks and gaze?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember that the moment in question is completely experiential \u2013 there is nothing actually happening on a cosmic level.\u00a0 When we speak of sunset, the sun isn\u2019t actually doing anything it doesn\u2019t do any other time of day. The earth is still spinning at its same regular pace.
