{"id":1114,"date":"2017-07-24T08:23:47","date_gmt":"2017-07-24T12:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/?p=1114"},"modified":"2017-07-24T12:32:39","modified_gmt":"2017-07-24T16:32:39","slug":"into-the-wilderness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/2017\/07\/into-the-wilderness.html","title":{"rendered":"Into the Wilderness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/environment-1037000_1280.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1115\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/environment-1037000_1280-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/environment-1037000_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/environment-1037000_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/environment-1037000_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/environment-1037000_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>At the bottom of the hill where I live is what used to be called a Dead End.\u00a0 Now, I believe, developers address them more euphemistically \u2013 No Outlet, for example.<\/p>\n<p>The pavement doesn\u2019t stop so much as merge, shifting into crumbled asphalt, then stones, then weeds, then wilderness.\u00a0 I have the impression that once upon a time the street came to a distinct halt, but gradually Nature has been chipping away at that solid line, reclaiming it morsel by morsel, turning it from fine line into broad brush stroke.<\/p>\n<p>Musical value is often measured in connections.\u00a0 It\u2019s seldom enough to be a wonderful composition; a piece of music has to have a traceable impact on compositions that follow.\u00a0 In the process, second-rate compositions that miss their mark are sometimes celebrated for introducing ideas that later become standardized.<\/p>\n<p>This way of apprehending music, though rather common, is terribly nearsighted.\u00a0 It\u2019s the attitude that relegated Bach and Mahler to the dustbins of history for fifty years after their deaths.\u00a0 To measure music by the connections it makes to the following generation is to relegate listening to a secondary status, emphasizing historical narratives over sound.<\/p>\n<p>I am, of course, sensitive to the fact that my music could be seen as lacking connection (we are all prey to this assessment), as not pointing a way forward \u2013 in short, as a dead end \u2013it\u2019s an attitude from which I have to constantly shield myself.\u00a0 I write the music I need to write. \u00a0Because I need to write it, it is, by definition, historically relevant.\u00a0 The historical value others may assign to it is something else entirely, and can vary with the fashions of interpretation.\u00a0 The moment I let myself focus on where the music points is the moment it loses its immediacy, and its necessity.<\/p>\n<p>This focused approach benefits my teaching.\u00a0 Students come to me with all manner of outside influences to sift through.\u00a0 I help them absorb the influences around them, find the ones that are beneficial, and demonstrate how to focus on the things that really matter to them.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible, and valuable, to look at dead ends as more than a stoppage.\u00a0 For me, they are merging points, all the more enticing because what they merge with is often unknown.\u00a0 There are millions of points where human endeavors connects to other human endeavors, and that\u2019s great.\u00a0 But why should we care less about the millions of points where human endeavors run straight into the wilderness?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the bottom of the hill where I live is what used to be called a Dead End.\u00a0 Now, I believe, developers address them more euphemistically \u2013 No Outlet, for example.
