{"id":1109,"date":"2017-06-19T06:49:21","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T10:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/?p=1109"},"modified":"2017-06-19T06:49:21","modified_gmt":"2017-06-19T10:49:21","slug":"charlotte-new-music-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/2017\/06\/charlotte-new-music-festival.html","title":{"rendered":"Charlotte New Music Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/CNMF-Logo-for-website-footer.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1110\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/curves\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/CNMF-Logo-for-website-footer.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"77\" \/><\/a>I am off to the <a href=\"http:\/\/charlottenewmusic.org\"><strong>Charlotte New Music Festival<\/strong><\/a>, a gathering of composers, performers and music lovers in the Queen City over the second half of June.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be teaching seminars and lessons, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/outofboundsmusic.wordpress.com\"><strong>Out of Bounds Ensemble<\/strong><\/a> will be premiering a new piece of mine \u2013 <em>Let Slip<\/em> \u2013 on June 23 at the Steinway Piano Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gestures (fl, ob, perc, pno) by Egid Joechi<\/li>\n<li>simul justus et peccator (vln, gtr) by Timothy Clay<\/li>\n<li>7 Step (fl, vln, vla, gtr, perc, pno) by Nathan Mays<\/li>\n<li>Summer Breeze (fl, vla, gtr, perc) by Zach Davis<\/li>\n<li>Serene Euphoria (vln, ob, piano) by Victor Zheng<\/li>\n<li>9 Haiku (fl, pno) by Michael Fiday<\/li>\n<li>Prelude and Postlude for a Bach Sonata (vln) by Dana Kaufman<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s just one of eight concerts over the course of two weeks \u2013 should be a good time.<\/p>\n<p><em>Let Slip<\/em> has an unusual scoring: flute, oboe, violin, viola, percussion, piano.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been writing a lot of quiet, understated music lately, but <em>Let Slip<\/em> is anything but.\u00a0 Here is my program note for it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some wars are just; some battles must be joined.<\/p>\n<p>But no war, in my lifetime, has ended well, to the extent that they have ended at all. Each one exacts a cost that continues to demand repayment.<\/p>\n<p>When Marc Antony comes upon his friend slain by traitors in Act III of <em>Julius Caesar, <\/em>his grief bursts forth in a bloodthirsty speech, words that lash up a lather of hatred and violence. The speech famously culminates \u201cCry &#8216;Havoc,&#8217; and let slip the dogs of war.\u201d The metaphorical hounds, once let off their leash, bring \u201cdreadful objects so familiar\/That mothers &#8230; but smile when they behold\/Their infants quarter&#8217;d with the hands of war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forever warring or on the brink of war, mankind has let slip those beasts time and time again, always with dreadful consequences.
