Information, after all, wants to be free.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-cyCkSr76wjA\/TrAnTOAEJCI\/AAAAAAAABMQ\/Ep03zp1oc8c\/s1600\/Free+Ride.png\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-cyCkSr76wjA\/TrAnTOAEJCI\/AAAAAAAABMQ\/Ep03zp1oc8c\/s1600\/Free+Ride.png\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s tempting to believe that the devaluation of creativity we&#8217;ve seen over the last decade was somehow inevitable,&#8221; writes former Billboard editor Robert Levine, &#8220;that technology makes information so easy to distribute that any attempt to regulate it is futile.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Levine&#8217;s new book &#8212; <i>Free Ride: How Digital Parasites are Destroying the Culture Business, and How the Culture Business Can Fight Back<\/i> &#8212; argues that it didn&#8217;t have to be this way. Various industries &#8212; music, newspapers, publishers &#8212; swallowed a lot of b.s. about how the Web was going to make everyone rich, and now they&#8217;re living with the consequences.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke to Levine for today&#8217;s Salon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2011\/11\/01\/does_culture_really_want_to_be_free\/\">here<\/a>.
