Other times, you get to talk to Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman about Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn, the strong-willed war correspondent who would hate to be remembered at Papa&#8217;s third wife.<\/p>\n<p>Later this month, HBO will broadcast a film, <i>Hemingway &#038; Gellhorn<\/i>, about the two writers and their ferocious love affair against the background of the churn of world politics. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/news\/movies\/la-ca-hemingway-gellhorn-20120520,0,3035397.story\">Here<\/a> is my story, for which I interviewed the two actors as well as Philip Kaufman, director of The Right Stuff and The Unbearable Lightness of Being.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-fkfBqxXDBeo\/T7qOzr88gVI\/AAAAAAAABVY\/G95zGcYWFOo\/s1600\/CliveOwen_20050923.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-fkfBqxXDBeo\/T7qOzr88gVI\/AAAAAAAABVY\/G95zGcYWFOo\/s320\/CliveOwen_20050923.jpg\" width=\"219\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-D-7rAI2qckY\/T7qOT4ZixkI\/AAAAAAAABVQ\/D7Ow6aB6u3A\/s1600\/Nicole_Kidman_2012.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-D-7rAI2qckY\/T7qOT4ZixkI\/AAAAAAAABVQ\/D7Ow6aB6u3A\/s1600\/Nicole_Kidman_2012.jpg\"><\/a><span><span>&#8220;There was this five-, six-year tussle with her,&#8221; Kaufman told me. &#8220;It&#8217;s a very mythical kind of relationship they had: She&#8217;s a Hemingway heroine. The problem being: Is that what he really wanted in real life?&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I expected Kaufman and Owen (whose <i>Children of Men<\/i> is one of my favorite movies) to be intelligent and articulate. But Kidman really impressed me &#8212; she had more depth, seriousness, and curiosity to her than I would have guessed.
