He was the first science-fiction writer, and the first Los Angeles writer, many people read. I still remember devouring the stories from <i>The October Country<\/i> and <i>The Martian Chronicles<\/i> in elementary school.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Pft_ooIGWgY\/T9AwDb3M3yI\/AAAAAAAABWw\/FcnKIlrhrx8\/s1600\/The-Martian-Chronicles.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Pft_ooIGWgY\/T9AwDb3M3yI\/AAAAAAAABWw\/FcnKIlrhrx8\/s1600\/The-Martian-Chronicles.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>In a rush of emotion and recollection, I wrote my first piece for Zocalo Public Square on Bradbury&#8217;s complicated relationship with Los Angeles. <a href=\"http:\/\/zocalopublicsquare.org\/thepublicsquare\/2012\/06\/06\/the-martians-from-socal\/read\/nexus\/\">Here<\/a> it is. I may be unusual in preferring The Martian Chronicles to Fahrenheit 451, as important as that novel remains.<\/p>\n<p>Some really strong pieces in the press today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-jpW8d2vBaM0\/T894P4Mk24I\/AAAAAAAABWk\/ON2R9p2zO60\/s1600\/Ray_Bradbury_(1975).jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\"><span><\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/07\/books\/ray-bradbury-popularizer-of-science-fiction-dies-at-91.html?hp\">Here<\/a><span> is The New York Times&#8217; obit, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/obituaries\/la-me-ray-bradbury-20120607,0,3570142,full.story\">here<\/a> is an excellent LA Times piece by my friend Lynell George. And Ted Gioia wrote a very fine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2012\/06\/06\/ray_bradbury_the_man_who_made_sci_fi_respectable\/\">piece<\/a> on Salon on how Bradbury made science fiction respectable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Brother Ray&#8217;s legacy will live on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TODAY The Misread City mourns the death of Ray Bradbury.
