We met in Laguna Beach to talk about what was then his crisp new novel, The Dawn Patrol, which includes a posse of surfers.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-g3ko5FUkT94\/T_c3hLte9JI\/AAAAAAAABcg\/CFkn77IRaMA\/s1600\/savages_poster.png\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-g3ko5FUkT94\/T_c3hLte9JI\/AAAAAAAABcg\/CFkn77IRaMA\/s320\/savages_poster.png\" width=\"198\"><\/a><br \/>Winslow struck me right away as a great storyteller &#8212; he talked about growing up in a Navy family where well-told tales were taken very seriously &#8212; and that gift is paying off these days. His book <i>Savages<\/i>, set amid the U.S. and Mexico drug trade, has just opened in a film adaptation directed by Oliver Stone.
