{"id":726,"date":"2012-11-12T10:44:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T18:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/2012\/11\/oliver-stones-history-lesson.html"},"modified":"2012-11-12T10:44:00","modified_gmt":"2012-11-12T18:44:00","slug":"oliver-stones-history-lesson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/2012\/11\/oliver-stones-history-lesson.html","title":{"rendered":"Oliver Stone&#8217;s History Lesson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ABOUT a week ago, I spent some time with Oliver Stone, and his co-writer, the historian Peter Kuznick, talking about their new &#8220;Untold History of the United States.&#8221; The 10-part program, which goes up on Showtime starting tonight, is in a Howard Zinn\/Noam Chomsky line in looking at international and domestic issues, starting with World War II.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-YveAC_hiiqk\/UKFrxu6v54I\/AAAAAAAAB5E\/mogSB7tw6uo\/s1600\/Trinity_shot_color.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-YveAC_hiiqk\/UKFrxu6v54I\/AAAAAAAAB5E\/mogSB7tw6uo\/s320\/Trinity_shot_color.jpg\" width=\"278\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Perhaps the key theme of the series is the idea of American exceptionalism, which the two see as quite dangerous, and tied to a Manichean worldview that dates back to the Puritans.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, people on both sides of the aisle have reasons to be wary of Stone&#8217;s view of history, American and otherwise.
