I asked:<\/p>\n<p><i><span>Is it possible to lead a dedicated literary life in the billionaire-filled, media-crazed New York of today? To be heedless of the material world as you burrow into novels and ideas the way the old Partisan Review gang did in the &#8217;40s and &#8217;50s, to come up with notions that rock the intellectual landscape? And if so, who exactly is still paying attention?<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-uc9RZI364aY\/UPQ3F1i-IQI\/AAAAAAAACCc\/FF7FlHCBGPg\/s1600\/Hermes.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-uc9RZI364aY\/UPQ3F1i-IQI\/AAAAAAAACCc\/FF7FlHCBGPg\/s320\/Hermes.jpg\" width=\"320\"><\/a>The three novelists &#8212; Nathaniel Rich, Keith Gessen and Ed Park &#8212; all had slightly different answers. I&#8217;m still unsure how the changed economic\/literary\/journalistic landscape changes all this.<\/p>\n<p>And these days, Rich has a new novel coming &#8212; fresh off a burst of journalistic activity and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/06\/fashion\/nathaniel-and-simon-the-brothers-rich.html?pagewanted=all\">profile<\/a> on him and his bro in NYT Styles. <a href=\"http:\/\/nplusonemag.com\/authors\/gessen-keith\">Gessen<\/a> had a recent piece in the New Yorker and continues to write for \u00a0N+1, which he helped found.
