The Bay-Area-based Lamott, perhaps best known for the book <em>Bird by Bird<\/em>, spoke to me about a subject central to her new collection, <em>Small Victories<\/em> &#8212; forgiveness. <a title=\"Lamott on forgiveness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/12\/03\/anne_lamott_look_at_the_tea_party_some_of_the_angriest_most_hateful_people_on_earth_and_they%E2%80%99re_backed_by_what_they_think_is_scripture\/\" target=\"_blank\">Here<\/a> is the story.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out that while she knows forgiveness is important to her, it doesn&#8217;t come easy.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/url-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2524 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/url-3.jpg\" alt=\"url-3\" width=\"94\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Forgiveness has become a pursuit more important to me than almost anything. Because as I said in an old book, it\u2019s not my strong suit. I always joke that I wasn\u2019t one of those Christians who was heavily into forgiveness \u2013 that I was the other kind; that I was reform. But it\u2019s so awful to be a person who doesn\u2019t forgive; in my experience the willingness to change down deep always comes from the pain of not changing&#8230;\u00a0I really believe that earth is forgiveness school \u2013 I really believe that\u2019s why they brought us here, and then left us without any owner\u2019s manual.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Her whole piece &#8212; which came out of discussion with yours truly &#8212; is worth reading.
