Through the 19th century, orchestras got bigger.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"264\" data-total-count=\"653\">But as some American orchestras struggle in the post-downturn economy, they are taking a page from the corporate world and thinking smaller: They are downsizing, shedding some full-time positions while making up the difference with less costly part-time musicians.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"450\" data-total-count=\"1103\">The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra ended a contentious labor dispute and a two-month lockout this month by <a title=\"Article on agreement.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/09\/arts\/music\/agreement-ends-lockout-at-atlanta-symphony-orchestra.html\">agreeing to a new contract<\/a> that will effectively keep it smaller for the next few years \u2014 placing it in the company of major ensembles in <a title=\"Times article. \" href=\"http:\/\/query.nytimes.com\/gst\/fullpage.html?res=9F00E4DF1738F937A25753C1A9679D8B63\">Philadelphia<\/a>, <a title=\"Article on their settlement.\" href=\"http:\/\/archive.freep.com\/article\/20110408\/ENT04\/110408034\/DSO-strike-officially-over-musicians-ratify-pay-cut-contract\">Detroit<\/a>, Indianapolis, Minnesota and elsewhere that have temporarily or permanently trimmed their number of full-time musicians in recent seasons to save money. Is there a point &#8212; a number of players or proportion of shrinkage &#8212; where serious and irrepperable damage to an orchestra&#8217;s mission takes place?
