Well, it&#8217;s taken one step forward and two steps back, or perhaps vice versa &#8212; the new proposal\u00a0is very hard to figure out.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the Future of Music Coalition &#8212; a group whose policies I often, not always, concur with, <a title=\"FMC on net neutrality 2014\" href=\"https:\/\/www.futureofmusic.org\/blog\/2014\/10\/31\/we-dont-want-clever-net-neutrality-we-want-real-net-neutrality\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This week, news broke that the<strong>Federal Communications Commission<\/strong> (<span class=\"caps\">FCC<\/span>) is working on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20141031\/05122328994\/fcc-tests-waters-hybrid-net-neutrality-solution-that-almost-everyone-hates.shtml\">a new proposal for net neutrality that attempts to combine a couple different approaches<\/a>. While we appreciate the effort, net neutrality advocates care less about how slick the rules are, and more about whether they\u2019ll stand up in\u00a0court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/futureofmusic.org\/blog\/2014\/01\/14\/ever-get-feeling-youve-been-cheated-out-open-internet\">Because last time they didn\u2019t<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The vast majority of Americans want an Internet that works for everyone, and not just the biggest companies. And millions of us are on record supporting the reclassification of broadband service under Title <span class=\"caps\">II<\/span> of the Telecommunications Act. Title <span class=\"caps\">II<\/span> makes use of a longstanding principle in communications policy known as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common_carrier\">common carriage<\/a>.\u201d This is not some radical idea. It\u2019s been around since choo-choo trains and it\u2019s the reason why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Netneutrality_modern_template_pure_svg.svg_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Netneutrality_modern_template_pure_svg.svg_.png\" alt=\"Netneutrality_modern_template_pure_svg.svg\" width=\"100\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a>when you pick up the phone to call your bandmate, you don\u2019t have to wait for the rich people to finish talking\u00a0first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8230;We don\u2019t want clever net neutrality. We want <em>real<\/em> net\u00a0neutrality.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One of my favorite scribes on this issue, Robert Levine of Free Ride, tweeted: &#8220;I&#8217;m so glad the FCC is choosing a net neutrality policy that will continue to confuse the living hell out of everyone . . .&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Too many assignments and an upcoming trip keep me from weighing in further today.
