(The book, set in Oslo, is not one of those built around troubled detective Harry Hole.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke to Nesbo when he and his publisher were making a big push into the U.S. market in the wake of Stieg Larsson&#8217;s books. At the time, it wasn&#8217;t cl<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1734\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/background_landingpage_the-son-3D_v2-213x300.png\" alt=\"background_landingpage_the-son-3D_v2\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/background_landingpage_the-son-3D_v2-213x300.png 213w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/background_landingpage_the-son-3D_v2.png 593w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/>ear if it would work. But I think it&#8217;s fair to say that Nesbo has found a following in the States. For what it&#8217;s worth, he was publishing novels in Scandinavia, to some acclaim, years before Larsson&#8217;s <em>Girl With the Dragon Tattoo<\/em> came out.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a title=\"ST on Nesbo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/news\/books\/la-ca-jo-nesbo-20110522-story.html#page=1\" target=\"_blank\">Here<\/a> is my piece, in which he taked about reading Jim Thompson&#8217;s The Killer Inside Me.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t that into crime novels at all,&#8221; he says, &#8220;but a friend introduced me to the work of Jim Thompson \u2014 I loved all his books. When I read [Raymond] Chandler, it was a bit comic, these romantic, melancholy monologues. To me, Thompson was braver, more extreme.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I like Nesbo a lot, and found him smart and reflective.
