And, Guitarists&#8217; Brains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[contextly_auto_sidebar id=&#8221;3RwcvvUk1AC4BkVM7TnYA96GH4qbLhTJ&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>SOMEWHERE between consensus and cliche is the idea that television is better than ever and has reached a new depth and intelligence. To optimists, <em>The Wire<\/em>, <em>Homeland<\/em>, <em>Mad Men<\/em> and<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1604\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/250px-Mad_Men_Season_6_Promotional_Poster-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"250px-Mad_Men_Season_6,_Promotional_Poster\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/250px-Mad_Men_Season_6_Promotional_Poster-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/250px-Mad_Men_Season_6_Promotional_Poster.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/> so on show what&#8217;s possible even in these difficult times for culture.<\/p>\n<p>My sense, as I looked into various economic models for Salon, <a title=\"ST on cable TV, etc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2013\/07\/21\/cable_tv_to_the_rescue_will_the_quality_subscription_model_work_for_books_movies_music\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, is that the cable-TV model actually resembles <em>older<\/em> structures. Most of those quality shows don&#8217;t pay for themselves &#8212; they cost a lot to make and attract far fewer viewers than <em>Duck Dynasty<\/em>. They resemble the investigative reporting in your paper, which a chain department store indirectly pays for, or the piece of contemporary music your philharmonic puts on because of the packed houses for Tchaikovsky, or the modern dance piece that is effectively subsidized by the long Christmas run of The Nutcracker. In any case, those smart shows are vulnerable if cable providers stop &#8220;bundling,&#8221; in the same way your local newspaper or theater company suffers if people stop subscribing. If everything is &#8220;disaggregated,&#8221; only the most popular stuff survives. And a lot of good things disappear.<\/p>\n<p>According to my Salon colleague Andrew Leonard, that&#8217;s already starting to happen, and it could have unpleasant consequences fairly soon. He gets into it <a title=\"Andrew Leonard on cable TV, etc\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/04\/25\/say_goodbye_to_tvs_golden_age_why_comcasts_rise_and_net_neutralitys_downfall_will_change_everything\/\" target=\"_blank\">her<\/a>e, summing up some recent changes, including the battle over Aero:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To recap: On Tuesday, Netflix <a href=\"http:\/\/files.shareholder.com\/downloads\/NFLX\/3109028426x0x745654\/fb5aaae0-b991-4e76-863c-3b859c8dece8\/Q114%20Earnings%20Letter%204.21.14%20final.pdf\">lambasted<\/a> the proposed Comcast-Time Warner merger, declaring it \u201ca long-term threat\u201d to the healthy ecosystem of the Internet. Comcast promptly <a href=\"http:\/\/corporate.comcast.com\/comcast-voices\/comcast-response-to-netflixs-opposition-to-time-warner-cable-transaction\">riposted,<\/a> dismissing Netflix as a querulous, hypocritical whiner with a shaky grasp on the facts. Then, on Wednesday, HBO <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/why-the-hbo-amazon-deal-is-good-for-everyone-except-ne-1566557470\">sucker-punched Netflix<\/a> by agreeing to stream HBO shows through Amazon Prime, and AT&amp;T fired a warning shot across everyone\u2019s bow by <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2014\/04\/22\/att-creates-500m-joint-venture-for-a-netflix-style-tv-service\">announcing its own plans to get into the streaming video business<\/a> with a \u201cNetflix-like\u201d service. Also on Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2014\/04\/argument-preview-free-tv-at-a-bargain-price\/\">American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. v. Aereo, Inc.,<\/a> which could end up resulting in the most influential high court ruling regarding how TV programs are distributed in decades.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A related war is being waged today over net neutrality, a topic most people probably feel they&#8217;ve heard too much about but don&#8217;t quite understand. The issue, in short, is whether a few large technology corporations will (further) dominate the web. One of my favorite economics columnists, Michael Hiltzik, explains the stakes <a title=\"Hiltzik on net neutrality\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/hiltzik\/la-fi-mh-murder-of-net-neutrality-20140429,0,3234289.column#axzz30PK3zT3X\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. He begins this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You couldn&#8217;t say the crime is being committed by stealth. Quite the contrary: Tom Wheeler, the chairman of the <a id=\"ORGOV000341\" class=\"taxInlineTagLink\" title=\"Federal Communications Commission\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/economy-business-finance\/media-industry\/federal-communications-commission-ORGOV000341.topic\">Federal Communications Commission<\/a>, is aiming to slay net neutrality in broad daylight.
