Le Guin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SgMhYcLCyuI\/AAAAAAAAAQ8\/7b39Fqxhb_E\/s1600-h\/le+guin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SgMhYcLCyuI\/AAAAAAAAAQ8\/7b39Fqxhb_E\/s320\/le+guin.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><br \/>ONE of the greatest thrills of my professional life was the chance to interview the novelist ursula le guin last summer at her home in<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SgMhtW1lM4I\/AAAAAAAAARE\/jI-uevifD14\/s320\/lefthand.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\">\u00a0portland. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/news\/arts\/la-ca-ursula-leguin10-2009may10,0,5322342,full.story\">HERE<\/a> is my piece, which runs sunday in the LAT.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>le guin is one of the few writers from my childhood &#8212; 5th or 6th grade i think, for the &#8220;earthsea&#8221; books &#8212; who gives me the same pleasure, if in a different key, as an adult.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>in person, i found her \u00a0&#8212; at nearly 80 &#8212; to be intellectually and physically tough, like a frontierswoman. which fits a dedicated westerner who has fought to redraw the boundaries between serious and genre fiction.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>her latest novel, &#8220;lavinia,&#8221; which takes off from virgil&#8217;s &#8220;aeniad&#8221; and just came out in paperback, is fantastic. its puts some in mind of robert graves&#8217; delicious &#8220;i, claudius.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>my only regret is that the idea of a &#8220;long&#8221; LATimes piece has changed drastically since i started the story, and the result is too short to really capture the full sweep of a half-century long career, and a writer who has been acclaimed, controversial, and in and out of fashion over those years. either way, her accomplishment is profound.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Photo credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ursulakleguin.com\/\">ursulakleguin.com<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ONE of the greatest thrills of my professional life was the chance to interview the novelist ursula le guin last summer at her home in\u00a0portland.
