{"id":1104,"date":"2009-06-02T09:14:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-02T16:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/2009\/06\/denis-johnson-vs-the-reclusive-writer.html"},"modified":"2009-06-02T09:14:00","modified_gmt":"2009-06-02T16:14:00","slug":"denis-johnson-vs-the-reclusive-writer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/2009\/06\/denis-johnson-vs-the-reclusive-writer.html","title":{"rendered":"Denis Johnson vs. The Reclusive Writer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SiVlPK9nvOI\/AAAAAAAAAUA\/3NCMetsys48\/s1600-h\/TRP_navy.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SiVlPK9nvOI\/AAAAAAAAAUA\/3NCMetsys48\/s400\/TRP_navy.JPG\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SiVjkYWpXGI\/AAAAAAAAAT4\/kXnDT4UQlpg\/s1600-h\/denis2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SiVjkYWpXGI\/AAAAAAAAAT4\/kXnDT4UQlpg\/s400\/denis2.jpeg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a>ALMOST exactly two years ago i was walking through Book Expo America in ny with the galley for denis johnson&#8217;s then-new &#8220;tree of smoke.&#8221; at least half a dozen people who saw his name on the oversized spine stopped me and asked, with some excitement, where they could get one. i&#8217;ve never had a similar experience with another writer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>(the vietnam-set book, of course, went on to win the sometimes noirish, sometimes epic author a long overdue national book award.)<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>that palpable sense of anticipation &#8212; and my sense that johnson would once again refuse to do press or appearances for the novel &#8212;\u00a0led me to write <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/p\/2007\/sep\/02\/entertainment\/ca-recluse2\">THIS<\/a> piece on the phenomenon of &#8220;the reclusive writer.&#8221; as someone who&#8217;s loved salinger in high school and pynchon since college, it was a subject i&#8217;d been thinking about for years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>as luck would have it, FSG has just released the new johnson novel, &#8220;nobody move,&#8221; which is an expanded version of his monthly installments for playboy last year. (the magazine is trying a similar trick with a <a href=\"http:\/\/scott-timberg.blogspot.com\/2009\/03\/chasing-women-with-james-ellroy.html\">james ellroy<\/a> memoir right now.)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>johnson&#8217;s &#8220;nobody move,&#8221; is a stripped down crime novel that resembles jim thompson or early tarantino.\u00a0<span>\u00a0\u201cWhat the \u2014?
