{"id":1077,"date":"2009-10-07T10:14:00","date_gmt":"2009-10-07T17:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/2009\/10\/neil-halstead-and-mojave-3.html"},"modified":"2009-10-07T10:14:00","modified_gmt":"2009-10-07T17:14:00","slug":"neil-halstead-and-mojave-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/2009\/10\/neil-halstead-and-mojave-3.html","title":{"rendered":"Neil Halstead and Mojave 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SszfIL5Yl-I\/AAAAAAAAAbY\/mMj44teoFbw\/s1600-h\/neilhalstead_artistpic.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SszfIL5Yl-I\/AAAAAAAAAbY\/mMj44teoFbw\/s320\/neilhalstead_artistpic.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><br \/>ONE of the most undersung men in british rock music turns 39 today &#8212; take a bow neil halstead!<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>halstead has made an unusual transition &#8212; he first became known as leader of the shoegaze combo slowdive in the late 80s&#8230; they are sometimes compared to my bloody valentine and ride. that is a wonderful chapter in english rock, but to me he got better with his next band.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>mojave 3 &#8212; whose name was suggested by angeleno indie scholar <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiegoddess.com\/\">wendy fonarow<\/a>, a friend of the group and singer rachel goswell &#8212;  marked a huge step forward. here the group came up with the cornwall\/english equivalent of america&#8217;s alt-country movement, merging nick drake mystery with pedal-steel and a western-shirt aesthetic. several of  their records are near-masterpieces, and their last, &#8220;puzzles like you,&#8221; from 2006, is excellent even if it&#8217;s a bit less gentle.
