{"id":1057,"date":"2009-11-04T10:07:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-04T18:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/2009\/11\/inverting-alice-in-wonderland.html"},"modified":"2009-11-04T10:07:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-04T18:07:00","slug":"inverting-alice-in-wonderland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/culturecrash\/2009\/11\/inverting-alice-in-wonderland.html","title":{"rendered":"Inverting Alice in Wonderland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SvHGAP1BenI\/AAAAAAAAAf4\/WwHb2HuTdXI\/s1600-h\/looking-glass.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_yrL6yfubw8g\/SvHGAP1BenI\/AAAAAAAAAf4\/WwHb2HuTdXI\/s320\/looking-glass.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><br \/>WHEN world-class ski champion and hollywood film producer frank beddor approached me about his book project a couple years back, i wasnt sure what to think. the fact that, he told me, he had taken lewis carroll&#8217;s &#8220;alice&#8221; stories and turned them into a rather violent YA novel, as well as a graphic novel and video game, made me wonder if this was just a case of corporate-style &#8220;synergy&#8221; gone mad.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span>but beddor&#8217;s first book, &#8220;the looking glass wars,&#8221; was powerful and smart, and entirely un-cynical, as was its sequel. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2007\/nov\/18\/entertainment\/ca-beddor18\"><span>here<\/span><\/a><span> is my story on beddor, and here&#8217;s what i wrote at the time:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;What&#8217;s most impressive about them is that the novels seems to be recounting a universe fully imagined ahead of time. Beddor admires what he calls &#8220;the epic world creators&#8221; such as J.R.R.
