So, how will you work differently going forward? \u00a0Here are 3 questions to help you get started:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. What have you learned from the year just concluded? <\/strong>\u00a0 An\u00a0exercise: draw a line down the center of a single sheet of paper and headline one column “What Went Wrong”<\/strong> and the other “What Went Right.”<\/strong>\u00a0 Start writing and\u00a0don’t stop until you have a total of (at least) 50 items from the season just concluded. \u00a0(The columns need not be balanced.)<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0 Next, invite your Board, leadership team, staff, and volunteers to write\u00a0& share their own lists. \u00a0Discuss.<\/strong><\/u>\u00a0 The more explicit you all can be about what you\u00a0have learned, the greater is your capacity for advancement.<\/li>\n
  2. What is ONE adjustment to your future plans that is motivated by your organization’s Vision?<\/strong>\u00a0 The “mission statement” may be the Big Kahuna of a non-profit organization’s strategy for setting actionable priorities, but revisiting your VISION STATEMENT opens your organization to the fresh air of options and opportunities. \u00a0With your Board and\/or leadership team, invest\u00a0just a single hour to this discussion: “How might we pursue our ideal in some way fundamentally different\u00a0from what we are already doing?”<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n
  3. Is everyone onboard?<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0By the end of a\u00a0fiscal year, you and your team are likely already deep into the execution of the next. \u00a0Though arts & culture is a seasonal business, there’s rarely a lull in-between. \u00a0That’s why you need to create one.<\/strong><\/u> \u00a0Has everyone had a chance to be heard on what is (and isn’t) working? \u00a0Have ideas and plans been shared and discussed broadly? \u00a0It’s never\u00a0enough to merely report on decisions made by others, elsewhere. \u00a0Your team deserves to be meaningfully engaged in shaping your organization’s future. \u00a0Let down your guard for a while and conduct some “management by walking around” in your organization. \u00a0How exhausted, gratified, informed & excited is\u00a0your crew for the coming year? \u00a0Listen deeply. Making time for discussion now is essential for restoring the motivation and goodwill that your organization needs for the season ahead.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
