Take this Self-Test!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2382\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/checklist_blue2-300x257.jpg\" alt=\"checklist_blue2\" width=\"300\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/checklist_blue2-300x257.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/checklist_blue2-768x658.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/checklist_blue2-500x429.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/checklist_blue2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Arts administrators worry.<\/p>\n<p>We worry about cash flow. \u00a0We worry about achieving and sustaining consensus. \u00a0We worry about attracting and retaining quality staff team. \u00a0We worry about logistics. \u00a0We worry about outstanding grant applications and whether last year&#8217;s donors will continue their support this year. \u00a0We worry about deadlines and opening nights. \u00a0We worry about why ticket sales are underperforming budget expectations. \u00a0We worry about play-off games that get scheduled concurrent with long-standing major events. \u00a0We worry about the short term. \u00a0We worry about the long-term.<\/p>\n<p>It is our nature to worry.<\/p>\n<p>And late at night, when the world is quiet, we also lie awake and worry about\u00a0<strong>RELEVANCE.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The words vary, but the core of the question is: \u00a0<strong><em>&#8220;Who cares about the kind of work we do?&#8221;<\/em> <\/strong>\u00a0Sometimes we ask &#8220;who will care&#8221; or &#8220;who used to care&#8221; which reveals that the nature of our worries are NOW (say, when reviewing a disappointing ticket sales report) or SOON (as in considering next season&#8217;s offerings) or LATER (posed while updating a strategic plan.)<\/p>\n<p>In a brand new workshop called <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.audienceavenue.com\/schedule\/\">Opportunity Everywhere\u2122<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; recently presented in <strong>Seattle<\/strong> and <strong>Washington, DC<\/strong> &#8211; and coming soon to <strong>Denver, Boston, San Francisco<\/strong> and <strong>Fort Lauderdale<\/strong>, arts &amp; cultural organization leaders have been tackling that worry &#8211; taking time to parse it into its elemental components and address it as functions of the challenge of &#8220;audience development.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m delighted to share this self-test &#8211; and invite comments &amp; questions at <a href=\"mailto:MLehrman@audienceavenue.com\">MLehrman@audienceavenue.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">How Relevant is My Arts Organization?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h5><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Score each of the following questions on a scale of 1 (not at all satisfied) to 5 (highly satisfied).<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>HOW SATISFIED ARE YOU THAT&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The aim of our MISSION STATEMENT is important. \u00a0_____<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Even if you can&#8217;t quote or don&#8217;t love the specific words of your organization&#8217;s mission statement, answer this question based on your understanding of the intention it expresses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Our ARTISTIC CHOICES fulfill our mission. _____<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>For clarity, focus on the artistic decisions made within your organization within the last 24 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>We possess the CAPACITY to pursue our mission. _____<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>How satisfied are you with the financial, human, physical and intellectual resources available to you to pursue your mission?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>We understand &amp; agree on what drives RELEVANCE from the perspective of the people who attend and support our activities. _____<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>When it comes to making decisions within your organization &#8211; how thorough and explicit are any discussions of the implications of those decisions on your audiences, visitors, customers, donors and stakeholders?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>We own the full journey of the AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE. _____<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>To what extent has anyone within your organization charted and taken steps to direct the specific route by which attendees discover, decide, attend and evaluate their experience with you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>We satisfy the growing imperative of CONNECTIVITY. _____<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>How present is your organization in the world of social media? \u00a0Whatever your role or level, if you feel lonely, or if that support feels distant, that&#8217;s a legitimate cause for dissatisfaction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beyond survival, there&#8217;s a real CAUSE to our efforts. _____<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s not uncommon to spend one&#8217;s days\u00a0solving immediate challenges and crises. So, take a deep breath. \u00a0This question asks you to consider how much of your stress is relieved by recognizing the greater cause behind what your organization is working to accomplish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>We excel at making people feel CONNECTED. _____<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Every non-profit arts &amp; cultural organization has a &#8220;mission&#8221; at its core. \u00a0This questions asks you to evaluate how effectively your organization connects that mission to audiences, volunteers, donors, members, visitors, stakeholders, vendors, staff members and others with whom it comes in contact. \u00a0The imperative is to not merely &#8220;perform for&#8221; or &#8220;exhibit to&#8221; an audience, but to engage them in an on-going relationship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>TOTAL SCORE __________ \u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nMaximum = 45<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Scoring:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">40+<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; <strong>ROBUST<\/strong> &#8211; You appear to be on solid ground! \u00a0Be sure to share this self-test among others of your Staff and Board to confirm consensus. \u00a0Keep up the great work!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>35-39<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; <strong>PROMISING<\/strong> &#8211; Your results likely reveal a general weakness or a very specific weakness. \u00a0Either way, rest assured that you&#8217;re in a fairly strong situation where you can take proactive steps to improve your ratings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>30-34<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; <strong>CHALLENGED<\/strong> &#8211; Relevance can be a fragile and fast-changing virtue. \u00a0Consider this evaluation as a &#8220;wake up call.&#8221; \u00a0It doesn&#8217;t mean that nobody loves you or that you&#8217;re locked in a downward spiral. \u00a0It does mean that it&#8217;s time for your staff and Board leadership to focus on being mindful &amp; purposeful on ALL the ways it can work to pursue relevance. \u00a0As the saying goes, <em>&#8220;It&#8217;s not how many times you get knocked down that matters. \u00a0It&#8217;s how many times you get back up.&#8221; \u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>below 30<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; <strong>CONCERNED<\/strong> &#8211; Don&#8217;t fret! \u00a0This self-test also serves as a &#8220;flotation device&#8221; &#8211; and can be used to create a specific action plan for your organization. \u00a0Consider sharing this self-test among others of your Staff and Board to identify areas of shared concern and priority. \u00a0It&#8217;s not too late start asking profound questions or to consider making meaningful changes, but you should proceed with a sense of urgency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p># # #<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arts administrators worry.
