{"id":2192,"date":"2014-02-16T13:00:51","date_gmt":"2014-02-16T20:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/?p=2192"},"modified":"2014-02-16T13:00:51","modified_gmt":"2014-02-16T20:00:51","slug":"the-great-hibernation-is-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/2014\/02\/the-great-hibernation-is-over\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great Hibernation is Over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2194\" alt=\"Hibernation\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Hibernation-300x211.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Hibernation-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Hibernation.jpg 413w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Economists appear to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/general\/2013\/08\/17\/the-great-recession-is-over-on-average.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">concluded<\/a> that the &#8220;Great Recession&#8221; that began in December, 2007 officially ended in June, 2009.<\/p>\n<p>So, what shall we in the arts &amp; cultural sector call the pro-longed period of hunkered-down existence that we&#8217;ve endured ever since?<\/p>\n<p>For more than six years, we&#8217;ve persevered in the face of withered philanthropy, slashed public funding, preempted corporate sponsorship and the contraction of consumer spending.<\/p>\n<p>We &#8211; our staff, leadership and volunteers &#8211; have responded with every bit of tenacity, penny-pinching, artistic creativity and painful decision making that we can muster. \u00a0We haven&#8217;t talked about &#8220;cutting the fat&#8221; from our budgets for years &#8211; because there hasn&#8217;t <em><strong>been<\/strong><\/em> any fat for a very long time. \u00a0 We&#8217;ve endeavored to protect what&#8217;s sacred about our organization&#8217;s artistic mission and the quality of audience experience that we deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Is our long winter over? \u00a0Perhaps, not yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But that doesn&#8217;t mean that it&#8217;s not time to &#8220;wake up.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How many people in your organization have worked there &#8211; or elsewhere in the nonprofit arts &amp; cultural sector for less than 10 years? \u00a0How many of your organization&#8217;s Board members served in such a volunteer leadership capacity only since the economic downturn of 2007? \u00a0How many executive and senior management leaders rose to their positions in recent years and have never experienced leadership in anything other than &#8220;tough times.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s practically an entire generation of arts &amp; cultural leaders who\u00a0<em><strong>have only known<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>existence &#8220;in winter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to be mindful of the need for a great awakening. \u00a0(And as I travel the country, I&#8217;m discovering evidence of it happening everywhere!) \u00a0I look forward to citing examples &#8211; MANY EXAMPLES &#8211; in future posts.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to embolden ourselves and our organizations. \u00a0It&#8217;s time to invigorate our mission statements and strategic plans. \u00a0It&#8217;s time to champion a vision of what our towns and cities can &#8211; AND SHOULD &#8211; be with arts appreciation and cultural experience asserted as essential community values. \u00a0It&#8217;s time to champion forge innovative partnerships, business models and technological advancements.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there&#8217;s still snow on the ground and the landscape is less hospitable than it was before. \u00a0But the promise of &#8220;Spring&#8221; is in the air. \u00a0The arts &amp; cultural sector is fast approaching its season of renewal and revitalization &#8211; of\u00a0the blossoming of artistic potential and entrepreneurial opportunity in service to our audiences and communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Great Hibernation is over. \u00a0Possibilities are again in season.<\/p>\n<p>Ambition welcome.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/p>\n<p>TAMPA &#8211; ORLANDO &#8211; MIAMI\/FORT LAUDERDALE &#8211; SAN FRANCISCO &#8211; NYC &#8211; ST LOUIS &#8211; \u00a0DETROIT &#8211; DALLAS &#8211; PROVIDENCE &#8211; MINNEAPOLIS &#8211; <em><strong>AND MORE&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Matt is on the road teaching arts &amp; cultural leaders how to get smarter, grow stronger &amp; gain audiences. \u00a0One participant recently called his <strong>Audiences Everywhere\u2122<\/strong>\u00a0workshop, &#8220;<strong><em>Mind-opening, rut-clearing, possibility renewing.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Check out where &amp; when:<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.audienceavenue.com\/appearances\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.audienceavenue.com\/appearances\/<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; or contact Matt directly at MLehrman@audienceavenue.com to schedule a visit to YOUR community.<\/p>\n<p># # #<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Economists appear to have concluded that the &#8220;Great Recession&#8221; that began in December, 2007 officially ended in June, 2009.
