{"id":2179,"date":"2014-02-01T13:37:39","date_gmt":"2014-02-01T20:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/?p=2179"},"modified":"2014-02-01T13:37:39","modified_gmt":"2014-02-01T20:37:39","slug":"a-budget-for-not-more-of-the-same","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/2014\/02\/a-budget-for-not-more-of-the-same\/","title":{"rendered":"A Budget for &#8220;NOT MORE OF THE SAME&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2180\" alt=\"more_of_the_same\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/more_of_the_same-300x255.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/more_of_the_same-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/more_of_the_same.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In springtime, a nonprofit&#8217;s thoughts turn to thoughts of&#8230;<\/em> \u00a0<strong>BUDGET<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">In many organizations, the annual budget is an exercise of simply replacing the names of THIS year&#8217;s performances, events or exhibitions with those of NEXT year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sure, we&#8217;ll lower revenue expectations for similar events that under-performed this season &#8211; and we&#8217;ll raise projections for events that we hope will perform better next year. \u00a0And everybody agrees to hold the line on expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Understandably, non-profit organizations need their budgets to advance stability. \u00a0Unlike Tarzan, we don&#8217;t let go of one vine until we have a firm grasp on the next. \u00a0 Without a dedicated long-term funding source and\/or a guaranteed &#8220;blockbuster,&#8221; our organizations are simply not set up to take bold or risks<strong><em>\u00a0leaps of programmatic faith<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">So, how does an arts organization resist the &#8220;more of the same&#8221; mentality?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The budget is an EXCELLENT place to start. \u00a0Here we can challenge ourselves to dedicate a portion to a project called, &#8220;NOT MORE OF THE SAME.&#8221; \u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Start by carving out as little of 1 percent of your organization&#8217;s budget. \u00a0Not enough to hurt. \u00a0But enough to start a habit.<\/p>\n<p>Create a &#8220;NOT MORE OF THE SAME&#8221; task force &#8211; <strong><em>with new participants every year<\/em> <\/strong>&#8211; and challenge &amp; authorize them for the incredibly fun job to advance your organization&#8217;s mission in some creative way &#8211; guided by the principle that their responsibility is to do &#8220;NOT MORE OF THE SAME.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Learn from their endeavors. \u00a0Celebrate their efforts. \u00a0Embrace the concept that the future holds more opportunities and options than you can imagine &#8211; and that your organization is opening itself up to them all.<\/p>\n<p>And, finally, make it a habit to keep increasing the budgetary allocation for &#8220;Not More of the Same&#8221; by (at least) 1 percent annually.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine how your organization will look 10 years from now, when you commit, today, to &#8220;Not More of the Same.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>CATCH ME IF YOU CAN!<\/strong><\/span> \u00a0I&#8217;m traveling the country with my\u00a0<strong>Audiences Everywhere\u2122<\/strong> workshop. \u00a0Check out where &amp; when: \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.audienceavenue.com\/appearances\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.audienceavenue.com\/appearances\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"># # #<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In springtime, a nonprofit&#8217;s thoughts turn to thoughts of&#8230; \u00a0BUDGET.
