{"id":2155,"date":"2013-10-22T10:26:32","date_gmt":"2013-10-22T17:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/?p=2155"},"modified":"2013-10-23T09:25:42","modified_gmt":"2013-10-23T16:25:42","slug":"erosion-of-arts-participation-is-the-wrong-headline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/2013\/10\/erosion-of-arts-participation-is-the-wrong-headline\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Erosion of Arts Participation&#8221; is the WRONG Headline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a child, <strong>one of my favorite picture books*<\/strong> told the story of six field mice that visit a barn. \u00a0At the end of the day, they are completely unable to reconcile what they have observed (a cow) because each has seen it from a different perspective &#8211; left side, front, bottom, right side, back &amp; top.<\/p>\n<p>The story comes to mind as I&#8217;ve downloaded the just-published National Endowment for the Arts&#8217; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/arts.gov\/news\/2013\/national-endowment-arts-presents-highlights-2012-survey-public-participation-arts\" target=\"_blank\">2012 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; a report that deserves to be REQUIRED READING for leadership staff &amp; Board members of all arts &amp; cultural organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Excitedly, I jumped to a statistic I have been following closely for as long as I&#8217;ve been working in the field. It shows the &#8220;Percent of U.S. Adults who attended at least one of various types of arts performances or visited an art museum or gallery 1982 &#8211; 2012.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2157\" alt=\"sppa chart\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/sppa-chart-300x255.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/sppa-chart-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/sppa-chart-500x425.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/sppa-chart.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is disappointing &#8211; but not at all surprising &#8211; to see that the benchmark has dropped to 33.3 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The chart suggests an obvious headline: \u00a0<strong>ARTS PARTICIPATION CONTINUES TO ERODE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s think about that headline&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>To &#8220;erode&#8221; &#8211; as if these remaining pillars of participation were like the formations of Monument Valley &#8211; last vestiges of ancient strength and vitality &#8211; with no remaining destiny other than to gradually wear away. \u00a0Erosion is, by definition, inevitable and irreversible.<\/p>\n<p>As a metaphor, &#8220;erosion&#8221; has its uses&#8230; \u00a0Feel free to take your pick from among its many causes: declining arts education in schools; the Great Recession; the aging of arts audiences; competition with entertainment technology; the narrowing of community mindedness &amp; \u00a0and plenty more!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-2166\" alt=\"Monumentvalley\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Monumentvalley-500x155.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Monumentvalley-500x155.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Monumentvalley-300x93.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>The trouble with metaphors is that once accepted, they constrain our expectations of what is possible.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have one to offer right off the top of my head, but this certainly deserves come creative thought.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that NEA recognizes this challenge, too. \u00a0I&#8217;m delighted to see that they are <a href=\"http:\/\/artsdata.challengepost.com\/?utm_expid=45049691-13.oDFYLIP9RZipatGovc_97w.0&amp;utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Farts.gov%2Fnews%2F2013%2Fnational-endowment-arts-presents-highlights-2012-survey-public-participation-arts\" target=\"_blank\">inviting artists &amp; designers to help develop new \u00a0&#8220;visualizations&#8221; for this important data<\/a>. \u00a0Great Idea!
