{"id":1882,"date":"2013-06-24T17:50:10","date_gmt":"2013-06-25T00:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/?p=1882"},"modified":"2013-06-25T09:51:36","modified_gmt":"2013-06-25T16:51:36","slug":"nonprofit-organizations-need-a-black-box","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/2013\/06\/nonprofit-organizations-need-a-black-box\/","title":{"rendered":"Nonprofit Organizations Need a Black Box"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1884\" alt=\"Flight-Data-Recorder\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Flight-Data-Recorder1-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Flight-Data-Recorder1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Flight-Data-Recorder1-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Flight-Data-Recorder1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Onerous headlines in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/thingstodo\/arts\/articles\/20130621arizona-theatre-co-1-million-red.html\" target=\"_blank\">Phoenix<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/azstarnet.com\/lifestyles\/troubled-arizona-theatre-company-sees-m-deficit\/article_3abe1be5-4c1c-55d8-8f23-90f32794bf17.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tucson <\/a><\/strong>this week as <strong>Arizona Theatre Company<\/strong>, the only resident company in the US that serves as a two-city operation,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is reportedly\u00a0ending its current fiscal year with a $1 million deficit.<\/p>\n<p>I have nothing but respect and compassion for the management &amp; Board of my state&#8217;s preeminent professional theatre company. \u00a0I remain hopeful and confident that they will work hard to restore the organization&#8217;s financial health. \u00a0I wish them nothing but the best.<\/p>\n<p>They may be the latest Arizona arts organization to make such headlines, but they surely won&#8217;t be the last.<\/p>\n<p><em>For full disclosure and so you know that I speak from a position of personal experience, \u00a0I served as the Founder &amp; long-time Executive Director of Alliance for Audience, the nonprofit service organization to Arizona&#8217;s arts &amp; cultural sector. \u00a0AFA went out of business last October.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over the last 20 years of my career in the arts &amp; cultural sector, I&#8217;ve watched organizations soar to great triumphs. \u00a0I&#8217;ve watched others crash. \u00a0I&#8217;ve witnessed capable leaders fight through tough economic headwinds. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been on hand to toast fiscal years ending in the black &amp; surpassing budget.<\/p>\n<p>But through all of this, I can&#8217;t remember once &#8211; neither in good times or bad &#8211; when <strong>any<\/strong> organization committed itself to anything like a <em><strong>thorough evaluation<\/strong><\/em> of what it experienced and what it should learn from the experience.<\/p>\n<p>In the event of an airplane mishap, the black-box data is analyzed to determine what was known, when it was known, what was done about it and (importantly) what alternatives should\/could have been considered. \u00a0Pilots and engineers study those findings as a way to learn to build stronger aircraft &#8211; and to better train pilots for the future.<\/p>\n<p>So, for nonprofit arts &amp; cultural organization leaders facing all kinds of challenges, <strong>where is OUR ORGANIZATION&#8217;S black box<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>How do we expect our staff, management and Boards of Directors to get SMARTER without a dedicated program of on-going training by which to study and learn from our experiences &#8211; and from the experiences of others?<\/p>\n<p># # #<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Onerous headlines in Phoenix and Tucson this week as Arizona Theatre Company, the only resident company in the US that serves as a two-city operation,\u00a0is reportedly\u00a0ending its current fiscal year with a $1 million deficit.
