{"id":1677,"date":"2013-05-09T21:02:34","date_gmt":"2013-05-10T04:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/?p=1677"},"modified":"2013-05-09T21:02:34","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T04:02:34","slug":"who-is-your-chief-relevance-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/2013\/05\/who-is-your-chief-relevance-officer\/","title":{"rendered":"Who is your &#8220;Chief Relevance Officer?&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1678\" alt=\"Relevance_Meter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Relevance_Meter-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Relevance_Meter-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Relevance_Meter-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Relevance_Meter-500x500.png 500w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Relevance_Meter-70x70.png 70w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Relevance_Meter-110x110.png 110w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Relevance_Meter.png 567w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Whose job is &#8220;relevance?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Does the word appear in any <strong>job title<\/strong> on your company&#8217;s organization chart?<\/p>\n<p>Does the word <em><strong>even appear<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0in the<strong> job description<\/strong> of any position in your organization?<\/p>\n<p>Will you argue that &#8220;relevance&#8221; is the obvious province of your organization&#8217;s artistic director or curator since it is they who are responsible for interpreting and advancing your organization&#8217;s artistic mission?<\/p>\n<p>With all due respect to artistic leaders, your artistic vision, talent and experience doesn&#8217;t define &#8220;relevance.&#8221; \u00a0Not a &#8220;peer review&#8221; by your esteemed colleagues nor even a laudatory New York Times review, qualifies as a measure of &#8220;relevance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s be clear: \u00a0&#8220;Relevance&#8221; is the measure of CONNECTION between the offerings of your organization and the expectations of your audience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a measure of critical acclaim &#8211; ticket sales &#8211; memberships &#8211; web traffic &#8211; retweets &#8211; Facebook likes &#8211; guest book comments &#8211; standing ovations &#8211; contributions &#8211; or any other one thing.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s ALL of that. \u00a0And much more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Relevance&#8221; isn&#8217;t the destination. \u00a0It&#8217;s the journey. \u00a0And as soon as you think you&#8217;ve achieved it &#8211; it moves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s my suggestion. \u00a0Don&#8217;t assign the title of &#8220;Chief Relevance Officer&#8221; to any one person in your organization. \u00a0Instead, make it a title that ROTATES throughout your organization on a monthly basis. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the core of the position&#8217;s job responsibilities: \u00a0At the end of every 30 days, the title-holder should be responsible to issue a report on actions taken over the last 30 days and provide an updated plan (including assignment of actions) for the next 90 days <em><strong>for the whole organization.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Your organization doesn&#8217;t need a &#8220;Chief Relevance Officer.&#8221; \u00a0But, your organization DOES need to cultivate a culture in which everyone understands that &#8220;relevance&#8221; is a critical part of their job responsibility.<\/p>\n<p># # #<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whose job is &#8220;relevance?&#8221; Does the word appear in any job title on your company&#8217;s organization chart?
